The so‑called “lost thirty years” coincided with the retirement of the generation that had driven Japan’s postwar economic growth, and the rise of a generation shaped by the shortcomings of postwar education—one that has lost confidence and pride in being Japanese. In that sense, the current situation was almost inevitable. Dividing society into “exploiters” and “the exploited,” and interpreting history as class struggle—this is the standard template of Marxist historiography (historical materialism). Landlords exploited serfs, capitalists exploited workers, whites oppressed minorities, men oppressed women, and the sexual majority oppressed sexual minorities (LGBTQ). Therefore, the argument goes, the rights of minorities must be legally guaranteed.
Such covert Marxists have deeply infiltrated the U.S. Democratic Party, the mass media, and teachers’ unions, and have promoted what is known as CRT (Critical Race Theory) as a political movement.

The United States defeated the Soviet Communist Party in the Cold War and loudly proclaimed the victory of liberalism. Yet beneath the surface, its education system and mass media were being eaten away like termites by covert Marxists. The realization came too late.

Astute readers will already have noticed: CRT has already been introduced in Japan. In Japan, it is called the “masochistic view of history.” This ideological bias has been especially rampant in the fields of ancient history and modern history.

In ancient history, scholars deliberately obscured the origins of the Japanese state and created an image such as: “Immigrants from the continent brought civilization to the primitive Jōmon society.” “In the Yayoi period, class society emerged from the monopolization of rice, and the emperor stood at the top of the wealthy elite.” “That emperor then drove out the Jōmon people, whose descendants are the Ainu.”
Thus emerged the image of “pathetic Japanese who could do nothing but accept continental culture, who built a class society with the emperor at its apex, and who continued to discriminate against the Jōmon people.” In modern history, the narrative became: “Japan isolated itself during the Edo period and fell behind world civilization; awakened only when Perry arrived; then imitated the great powers, turned to militarism, invaded Ryukyu and Korea, and ultimately started a world war and suffered a crushing defeat—pitiful Japanese.”
このような教科書で歴史を学んだ子どもたちは、先人への愛着も尊敬の念も持てない、ただただ恥ずかしい祖先の行いを丸暗記させられる歴史の時間は苦痛でしかない。「日本人であることを恥じよ」—これは日本版CRTなのです。
Children who learned history from such textbooks could feel neither affection nor respect for their predecessors. History class became nothing but the painful memorization of shameful deeds committed by their ancestors. “Be ashamed of being Japanese”—this is the Japanese version of CRT.
これに対抗しうるのは、「日本人ってすごい!」「日本が世界の文明をつくった」「日本人は、特別な遺伝子を持ったすぐれた民族だ」…などという都市伝説ではありません。イデオロギーに対して別のイデオロギーをぶつけても、不毛な神学論争になるだけだからです。
What can counter this? Certainly not urban legends like “The Japanese are amazing!”, “Japan created world civilization,” or “The Japanese are a superior people with special genes.” Confronting ideology with another ideology only leads to sterile theological disputes.

Our weapon is facts and evidence. In the field of ancient history, entirely new perspectives are emerging from archaeology, molecular biology, linguistics, and other disciplines. As scholarship becomes increasingly specialized and researchers can speak only within their narrow domains, it is teachers who can cross disciplinary boundaries and speak about history as a whole.
