仏教とキリスト教。たがいに豊かにできる可能性とは？「ダライ・ラマ、イエスを語る」その４。

そもそも人は、それぞれが育てられ、信じている宗教を大切にすべきで、仏教徒は
仏教の道を究め、キリスト教徒はキリスト教の信仰を深めていけば良い、というのが
ダライ・ラマの基本的な考え方です。その上で、無用な摩擦を避け、より良い世界を
築いていくために、互いに知っておいたほうが良いことが、いくつかあると言うの
です。ダライ・ラマは、語ります。   

For example, for some people, the Christian traditions, which are based on belief
in a Creator, have the most powerful effect on their ethical life and serve to motivate
them to act in an ethical and sound way. However, this might not be the case for
every person. For others, the Buddhist tradition, which does not emphasize belief
in a Creator, may be more effective. In the Buddhist tradition, there is an emphasis
on a sense of personal responsibility rather than on a transcendent being.

たとえば、創造主への信仰を基にしたキリスト教こそが、道徳的に正しい生涯を送る
上で一番効果があり、正しく健全な行動をするための動機づけをあたえてくれる、と
主張する人々がいます。しかし、だれでもそうだというわけではありません。創造主
を強調しない仏教の方が、効果がある人もいます。仏教では、超越的存在よりも個人
の責任という感覚により重きをおいていますからね。

It is also crucial to recognize that both spiritual traditions share the common goal
of producing a human being who is fully realized, spiritually mature, good, and
warm-hearted person. Once we have recognized these two points－commonality of
the goal and the clear recognition of the diversity of human dispositions－then I feel
there is a very strong foundation for dialogue. It is with these convictions, these two
principal premises, that I always enter into dialogue with other traditions.

それに、仏教もキリスト教も、完全に目覚めた、霊的に成熟した、温かい心を
持った、善い人をつくるという目的は同じだ、と認識することも大切です。目的は
同じだという認識と、人間の心の傾向はじつに多様だというはっきりした認識、
この二つの認識を持つことが、対話への基礎となると思います。私はいつでも、
この二つの前提を胸に、他の宗教との対話に参加します。

To sum up all that we’ve discussed, I feel there is tremendous convergence and
a potential for mutual enrichment through dialogue between the Buddhist and
Christian traditions, especially in the areas of ethics and spiritual practice, such as
the practices of compassion, love, meditation, and the enhancement of tolerance.
And I feel that this dialogue could go very far and reach a deep level of understanding.
要約すると、慈悲や愛や瞑想や寛容の修行のような、倫理的・霊的な修行の分野では
とくに、仏教とキリスト教の対話はうまく話がかみあって、おたがいを豊かにできる
可能性があると、私は思っています。
