Zen is said to be the foundation of Japanese culture. Let’s learn Zen through the
masterpiece by Daisetz Suzuki, who made a great contribution to introducing Japanese
culture to the world. Zen is one of the denominations of Buddhism that is a religion of
compassion and non-violence. How is it then that Zen has come to activate the fighting
spirit of the Japanese warrior? ――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
In Japan Zen was intimately related from the beginning of its history to the life of the
samurai. Although it has never actively incited the latter to carry on their bloody
profession, it has passively sustained them when they have for any reason once entered
into it
日本においては、禅は当初から武士の生活と密接な関係があった。もっともそれは
けっして彼らの血なまぐさい職業を実行するように示唆したのではない。武士が
なにかの理由で一たび禅に入った時は、禅は受動的に彼らを支持したのであった。
Zen has sustained them in two ways, morally and philosophically. Morally because Zen
is a religion which teaches not to look backward once the course is decided upon;
philosophically, because it treats life and death indifferently.
禅は道徳的および哲学的二つの方面から彼らを支援した。道徳的というのは、禅は、
一たびその進路を決定した以上は、振返らぬことを教える宗教だからで、哲学的
というのは生と死とを無差別に取扱うからである。
This not turning backward ultimately comes from the philosophical conviction, but being
a religion of the will Zen appeals to the samurai spirit more morally than philosophically.
From the philosophical point of view, Zen upholds intuition against intellection, for
intuition is the more direct way of reaching the Truth.
この振返らないということは、結局、哲学的確信からくるのであるが、元来、禅は意志
の宗教であるから、哲学的より道徳的に武士精神に訴えるのである。哲学的見地
からは、禅は知性主義に対立して直覚を重んじる。直覚の方が真理に到達する直接的な
道であるからだ。
Therefore, morally and philosophically, there is in Zen a great deal of attraction for the
military classes whose mind being comparatively simple and not at all addicted to
philosophizing――and this is one of the essential qualities of the fighter――naturally
finds a congenial spirit of Zen. This is probably one of the main reasons for the close
relationship between Zen and the samurai.
それゆえ、道徳的にも哲学的にも、禅は武門階級にとって非常に魅力がある。武門階級
の精神は比較的に単純で哲学的思索に耽るというようなことは全然ないから――これが
武人の根本的資質の一つであるが――当然、禅において似あいの精神を見いだすので
ある。おそらくこれが禅と武士との間に密接な関係が生じた主なる理由の一つで
あろう。
Secondly, Zen discipline is simple, direct, self-reliant, self-denying, and this ascetic
tendency goes well with the fighting spirit. The fighter is to be always single-minded with
just one object in view which is to fight and not to look either backward or sidewise. To go
straightforward in order to crush the enemy is all that is necessary for him.
つぎに、禅の修業は単純・直裁、自恃・克己的であり、この戒律的な傾向が戦闘精神と
よく一致する。戦闘者はつねに闘うべき目前の対象にひたすら心を向けていれば
よいので、振返ったり傍見をしてはならぬ。敵を粉砕するためにまっすぐに進むという
ことが彼にとって必要な一切である。
He is therefore not to be encumbered in any possible way, be it physical, emotional, or
intellectual. Intellectual doubts, if they are at all cherished in the mind of the fighter, are
great obstructions to his onward movement, while emotionalities and physical
possessions are the heaviest encumbrances he may have to suffer if he wants to behave
himself most efficiently in his business. Good fighters are generally ascetics or stoics,
which means to have an iron will. When needed Zen supplies them with this.
ゆえに彼は物質的・情愛的・知的いずれの方面がからも、邪魔があってはならぬ。もし
戦闘者の心に知的な疑惑が少しでも浮んだならば、それは彼の進行に大きな妨げ
となる。もろもろの情愛と物質的な所有物は、彼が最も有効的に進退せんと欲する場合
には、この上ない邪魔物になる。立派な武人は総じて禁欲的戒行者か自粛的修道者で
ある。という意味は鉄の意志を持っているということである。そうして必要あるとき、
禅は彼にこれを授ける。
