Zen is said to be the foundation of Japanese culture. Let’s learn Zen through the
masterpiece by Daisetz Suzuki, who made a great contribution to introducing Japanese
culture to the world. He gives us commentaries on what is common to Zen and the
tea-cult――more to come both in English and in Japanese.

What is common to Zen and the tea-cult is their constant attempt at simplification. The
elimination of unnecessaries is achieved by Zen in its intuitive grasp of final reality and
by the tea-cult in the art of living which is typified by serving tea in the tea-room.

The tea-cult is the estheticism of primitive simplicity. Its ideal to come close to Nature is
realized by sheltering oneself under a thatched roof and sitting in a room which is hardly
ten feet square, but which must be artistically constructed and furnished.

Zen also aims at stripping off all the artificial wrappings humanity has devised
supposedly for its own solemnization. Zen first of all combats the intellect, for in spite of
its practical usefulness the intellect goes against our attempt to delve into the depth of
our being.

Philosophy may propose all kinds of questions for their intellectual solution, but it is
never meant to give us spiritual satisfaction, which must be accessible to every one of
us, however intellectually undeveloped he is.

Philosophy is open only to those who are specifically endowed along its own line,
showing that it cannot be a subject of universal appreciation. Zen, or, more broadly
speaking, religion is to cast off all one thinks he possesses, even life, and to get back to
the last state of being, the “Original Abode,” or to one’s own Father or Mother. This can
be done by every one of us, for we are what we are because of it, or him, or her, and
without the latter we are nothing.

This is to be called the last stage of simplification, since things cannot be reduced to any
simpler state. The tea-cult symbolizes it in a solitary hut erected under an old pine-tree.
The form once thus symbolized, allows itself to be artistically treated. It goes without
saying that the principle of treatment is to be in perfect conformity with the original idea
which prompted it, that is, of elimination of unnecessaries.
