禅など仏教をアジア以外の世界に紹介したことで有名な、鈴木大拙。彼の名を世界的に
不動のものにした英文による傑作「神秘主義」をご紹介します。キリスト教と仏教の

SUZUKI Daisetsu was a well-known figure in the introduction of Buddhism, including
Zen, to the non-Asian world. I introduce to you his English masterpiece, “Mysticism,”
which established his reputation worldwide. He gives us commentaries on a universal
experience at the heart of Christianity and Buddhism, which transcends their
differences――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
In the following pages I attempt to call the reader’s attention to the closeness of Meister
Eckhart’s way of thinking to that of Mahayana Buddhism, especially of Zen Buddhism.
マイスター・エックハルトの考え方と大乗仏教、とくに禅仏教の思考法との親近性に
関して、著者は以下の頁において読者の注意を喚起しておきたいと思う。
“When God made man, he put into the soul his equal, his active, everlasting
masterpiece. It was so great a work that it could not be otherwise than the soul and the
soul could not be otherwise than the work of God.”
「神が人間を創造された時、人の魂の中に、ご自身と等しい、魂の活動してやまぬ永遠
の秀作を籠められた。それはあまりにも偉大な作品であったので、それは現にある魂
以外の何ものでもありえなかったし、人の魂は神の作品以外の何ものでも
ありえなかったのである。」
“God’s nature, his being, and the Godhead all depend on his work in the soul. Blessed,
blessed be God that he does work in the soul and he loves his work!”
「神の本性とか、存在とか、神性と呼ばれるものは、皆、人の魂の内なる神の作品に
依存している。神が人の魂の内ではたらきたまい、神が自身のはたらきを楽しまれる
ことは神にとって何と幸せなことであろうか!」
“That work is love and love is God. God loves himself and his own nature, being and
Godhead, and in the love he has for himself he loves all creatures, not as creatures but
as God. The love God bears himself contains his love for the whole world.”
「そのはたらきとは愛であり、愛が神なのである。神は自らを、自己自身の本質、
存在、神性を愛したもう。そして、自らに対する愛のうちで、すべての被造物を被造物
としてでなく、神として愛したもう。神が自ら帯びておられる愛の内には、神の全世界
に対する愛が宿されているのである。」
Eckhart’s statement regarding God’s self-love which “contains his love for the whole
world” corresponds in a way to the Buddhist idea of universal enlightenment. When
Buddha attained the enlightenment, it is recorded, he perceived that all beings
non-sentient as well as sentient were already in the enlightenment itself.
“全世界に対する愛が宿されている” という神の自己愛に関するエックハルトの発言は、
ある意味では宇宙に遍満するさとりという仏教の考えに相応するものである。経典の
記すところによれば、釈迦がさとりを開いた時、心をもった存在も、もたぬ存在も、
すでにさとりの真っ只中にあることを看破したのであるという。
The idea of enlightenment may make Buddhists appear in some respects more
impersonal and metaphysical than Christians. Buddhism thus may be considered more
scientific and rational than Christianity which is heavily laden with all sorts of
mythological paraphernalia.
さとりという考えはある点において、仏教徒をキリスト教徒よりも一層非人格的に、
そして形而上学的であるように思わしめるかもしれぬ。仏教は、そのため、さまざまな
種類の付属物を重くまとったキリスト教よりは、ずっと科学的であり合理的であると
見なされよう。
The movement is now therefore going on among Christians to denude the religion of this
unnecessary historical appendix. While it is difficult to predict how far it will succeed,
there are in every religion some elements which may be called irrational.
それゆえ、近年、キリスト教徒の間で、その教えからこれら多年にわたる不要な付属物
をはぎとってしまおうという運動が起こっているのである。この試みが一体どれほど
成功するであろうかを予言することは難しいが、どの宗教にも不合理なと言われる要素
はいくらかあるものである。
They are generally connected with the human craving for love. The Buddhist doctrine of
enlightenment is not after all such a cold system of metaphysics as it appears to some
people. Love enters also into the enlightenment experience as one of its constituents, for
otherwise it could not embrace the totality of existence.
それらは普通、人が愛を渇望してやまぬ存在であることに、関わり合いを持っている。
仏教のさとりの教義は、一部の人々が漠然と考えているような、帰するところ、血の
通わぬ形而上学の体系に他ならぬというわけではない。愛もまたその構成要素の一つと
して、さとりの体験内に入りこんでいるのである。というのは、さもなければ人間存在
の全体を包摂できぬことになろう。
The enlightenment does not mean to run away from the world, and to sit cross-legged at
the peak of the mountain, to look down calmly upon a bomb-struck mass of humanity. It
has more tears than we imagine.
さとりの体験は何も世俗から逃避して、山の頂上に胡坐 (あぐら) をかき、いわば煩悩に
蹂躙 (じゅうりん) されている大衆を、超然と見下ろすことを意味するものではない。
それは想像以上に涙ぐましい修行の成果なのだ。
