Yuval Noah Harari, who is the author of world best-sellers of over 20 million copies such
as “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” “Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow,”
gives us commentaries on the one-time foresight and the present problem of

Marx and his followers understood the new technological realities and the new human
experiences, so they had relevant answers to the new problems of industrial society, as
well as original ideas about how to benefit from the unprecedented opportunities. The
socialists created a brand new religion for a brand new world.

マルクスとその信奉者たちは、新しいテクノロジーの実情と新しい人間の経験を理解
していた。だから、工業社会の新しい問題に対する妥当な答えも、前例のない機会の
恩恵にどうあずかるかについての独創的な考えも持っていた。社会主義者たちは、
素晴らしき新世界のための素晴らしき新宗教を生み出したのだった。

They promised salvation through technology and economics, thus establishing the first
techno-religion in history, and changing the foundations of ideological discourse. Before
Marx, people defined and divided themselves according to their views of God, not about
production methods.

Since Marx, questions of technology and economic structure became far more important
and divisive than debates about the soul and the afterlife. In the second half of the
twentieth century humankind almost obliterated itself in an argument about production
methods. Even the harshest critics of Marx and Lenin adopted their basic attitude
towards history and society, and began thinking much more carefully about technology
and production than about God and heaven.

ところがマルクス以降は、テクノロジーと経済構造にまつわる問題のほうが、魂と来世
についての論議よりもはるかに重要で、はるかに大きな争いの種になった。20世紀
後半、人類は生産手段をめぐる論争が高じて、自らを跡形もなく消し去りかけた。
マルクスとレーニンを最も厳しく非難する人でさえ、歴史と社会に関する彼らの
基本的態度を採用し、神や天国よりもテクノロジーと生産について、はるかに注意深く
考え始めた。

In the mid-nineteenth century few people were as perspective as Marx, hence only a few
countries conquered the world. Most societies failed to understand what was happening,
and therefore missed the train of progress.

19世紀半ばには、マルクスほど鋭い洞察力を持った人はほとんどいなかった。だから
急速な工業化を遂げた国はわずかしかなかった。そして、これらの少数の国々が世界を

In the early twenty-first century the train of progress is again pulling out of the
station――and this will probably be the last train ever to leave the station called
Homo sapiens. Those who miss this train will never get a second chance. In order to get
a seat on it you need to understand twenty-first-century technology, and in particular the
powers of biotechnology and computer algorithms.

21世紀初頭の今、進歩の列車は再び駅を出ようとしている。そしてこれはおそらく、
ホモ・サピエンスと呼ばれる駅を離れる最後の列車となるだろう。これに乗りそこねた
人は、二度とチャンスは巡ってこない。この列車に席を確保するためには、21世紀の

These powers are far more potent than steam and the telegraph, and they will not be
used merely for the production of food, textiles, vehicles and weapons. The main
products of the twenty-first century will be bodies, brains and minds, and the gap
between those who know how to engineer bodies and brains and those who do not will
be far bigger than the gap between Dicken’s Britain and the Mahdi’s Sudan. Indeed, it
will be bigger than the gap between Sapiens and Neanderthals. In the twenty-first
century, those who ride the train of progress will acquire divine abilities of creation and
destruction, while those left behind will face extinction.

これらの力は蒸気や電信の力とは比べ物にならないほど強大で、食糧や織物、乗り物、
武器の生産にだけ使われるわけではない。21世紀の主要な製品は、体と脳と心で、体と
脳の設計の仕方を知っている人と知らない人の間の格差は、ディケンズのイギリスと
マフディーのスーダンの間の隔たりよりも大幅に拡がる。それどころか、サピエンスと

Socialism, which was very up to date a hundred years ago, failed to keep up with new
technology. Leonid Brezhnev and Fidel Castro held on to ideas that Marx and Lenin
formulated in the age of steam, and did not understand the power of computers and
biotechnology. Liberals, in contrast, adapted far better to the information age.

100年前には時代の先端を行っていた社会主義は、新しいテクノロジーについて
いけなかった。レオニード・ブレジネフとフィデル・カストロは、マルクスとレーニン
が蒸気の時代にまとめた考え方にしがみつき、コンピューターとバイオテクノロジーの
力を理解しなかった。それに対して自由主義者は、情報時代にずっとうまく適応した。

This partly explains why Khrushchev’s 1956 prediction (“Whether you, the liberal West,
like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!”) never materialized, and why it was
the liberal capitalists who eventually buried Marxists. If Marx came back to life today, he
would probably urge his few remaining disciples to devote less time to reading
Das Capital and more time to studying the Internet and the human genome.

1956年のフルシチョフの預言（「諸君（自由主義の西側諸国）が好むと好まざるとに
かかわらず、歴史は我々の味方だ。我々は諸君を葬り去るだろう！」）がついに実現
しなかった理由も、けっきょくは自由主義の資本主義者がマルクス主義者を葬り去った
理由も、部分的にはこれで説明できる。もしマルクスが今日生き返ったら、かろうじて
残っている信奉者たちに、『資本論』を読む暇があったらインターネットとヒトゲノム
を勉強するように命じることだろう。
