now wants to sound the alarm to us. Will humans be conquered by “the Data Religion”?

Techno-humanism faces an impossible dilemma here. It considers the human will to be
the most important thing in the universe, hence it pushes humankind to develop
technologies that can control and redesign the will. After all, it’s tempting to gain control
over the most important thing in the world.

テクノ人間至上主義は、ここでどうしようもないジレンマに直面する。テクノ
人間至上主義は、人間の意志がこの世界で最も重要なものだと考えているので、人類を
促して、その意志を制御したりデザインし直したりできるテクノロジーを開発させよう
とする。つまるところ、この世で最も重要なものを思いのままにできるというのは、
とても魅力的だから。

Yet should we ever achieve such control, techno-humanism would not know what to do
with it, because the sacred human would then become just another designer product. We
can never deal with such technologies as long as we believe that the human will and the
human experience are the supreme source of authority and meaning.

とはいえ、万一そのように制御できるようになったら、テクノ人間至上主義には、その
能力をどのように使ってどうすればいいのかわからない。なぜならそのときには、
神聖な人間もまた、ただのデザイナー製品になってしまうからだ。私たちは、人間の
意志と人間の経験が権威と意味の至高の源泉であると信じているかぎり、そのような
テクノロジーにはけっして対処できないのだ。

Hence a bolder techno-religion seeks to sever the humanist umbilical cord altogether. It
foresees a world that does not revolve around the desires and experiences of any
humanlike beings.

したがって、より大胆なテクノ宗教は、人間至上主義の臍 (へそ) の緒をすぱっと切断
しようとする。そういうテクノ宗教は、何であれ人間のような存在の欲望や経験を中心
に回ったりはしない世界を予見している。

What might replace desires and experiences as the source of all meaning and authority?
As of 2016, there is one candidate sitting in history’s reception room waiting for the job
interview. This candidate is information. The most interesting emerging religion is
Dataism, which venerates neither gods nor man ――it worships data.

あらゆる意味と権威の源泉として、欲望と経験に何が取って代わりうるのか？2016年の
時点では、歴史の待合室でこの任務の採用面接を待っている候補が一つある。その候補
とは、情報だ。最も興味深い新興宗教はデータ至上主義で、この宗教は神も人間も
崇めることはなく、データを崇拝する。

Dataism declares that the universe consists of data flows, and the value of any
phenomenon or entity is determined by its contribution to data processing. This may
strike you as some eccentric fringe notion, but in fact it has already conquered most of
the scientific establishment.

データ至上主義では、森羅万象がデータの流れからできており、どんな現象やものの
価値もデータ処理にどれだけ寄与するかで決まるとされている。これは突飛で傍流の
考え方だという印象を受けるかもしれないが、じつは科学界の主流をすでにおおむね
席巻している。

Hitherto, data was seen as only the first step in a long chain of intellectual activity.
Humans were supposed to distill data into information, information into knowledge, and
knowledge into wisdom.

これまでは、データは長い一連の知的活動のほんの第一段階と見なされていた。人間は
データを洗練して情報にし、情報を洗練して知識に変え、知識を洗練して知恵に昇華
させるべきだと考えられていた。

However, Dataists believe that humans can no longer cope with the immense flows of
data, hence they cannot distill data into information, let alone into knowledge or wisdom.
The work of processing data should therefore be entrusted to electronic algorithms,
whose capacity far exceeds that of the human brain. In practice, this means that Dataists
are skeptical about human knowledge and wisdom, and prefer to put their trust in Big
Data and computer algorithms.

ところがデータ至上主義者は、次のように見ている。もはや人間は厖大なデータの流れ
に対処できず、そのためデータを洗練して情報にすることができない。ましてや知識を
知恵にすることなど望むべくもない。したがってデータ処理という作業は電子工学的
アルゴリズムに任せるべきだ。このアルゴリズムの処理能力は、人間の脳の処理能力
よりもはるかに優れているのだから。つまり事実上、データ至上主義者は人間の知識や
知恵に懐疑的で、ビッグデータとコンピーターアルゴリズムに信頼を置きたがる
ということだ。

Dataism is neither liberal nor humanist. It should be emphasized, however, that Dataism
isn’t anti-humanist. It has nothing against human experiences. It just doesn’t think they
are intrinsically valuable.

データ至上主義は、自由主義的でも人間至上主義的でもない。とはいえ、
反人間至上主義的ではないことは特筆しておくべきだろう。データ至上主義は、人間の
経験を敵視しているわけではない。人間の経験には本質的な価値はないと考えている
だけだ。

True, for the last 70,000 years or so, human experiences have been the most efficient
data-processing algorithms in the universe, hence there was good reason to sanctify
them. However, we may soon reach a point when these algorithms will be superseded,
and even become a burden.

たしかに過去７万年ほどの間、人間の経験はこの世界で最も効率の良いデータ処理
アルゴリズムであり続けてきた。だから人間の経験を神聖視するのは当然だった。
ところが私たちは、このアルゴリズムがその座を奪われ、重荷にすらなる段階に
間もなく達するかもしれない。
