You have a total misunderstanding about “physical sensations,” don’t you? ――more to
come both in English and in Japanese.

It is very easy to create a story about how physical sensations such as pain or discomfort
should not be happening, or how we have been suffering with them for a long time.
Instead of just letting the sensations of pain or discomfort be as they are presently, we
place labels on them. Then they become part of our story. In this way, we suffer.

We “carry over” sensations through time. We say things like, “I’ve in pain for months,” or
“This pain  will probably never go away.” But what does the past memory or future
thought of pain really have to do with the present sensation of pain? Our past and future
stories of pain create conceptual overlay that we place on the present sensation of pain.
We make a time-bound story out of our pain, adding psychological and emotional
suffering to the present sensation.

What is the solution? The same as always: simply notice the words and pictures about
a pain as they arise. Let them be as they are. Don’t analyze, manipulate, add to, or try to
get rid of these words and pictures.

Rest as thought-free awareness repeatedly, letting all appearances come and go freely
and temporarily. Words and pictures will arise. Experience present sensations as often as
possible without trying to understand or analyze the words and pictures about pain as
they appear.

Words and pictures begin to relax naturally in this way. This natural relaxation does not
occur through making words and pictures into an enemy or trying to push thoughts of
pains out of your mind permanently. It occurs by resting and no longer emphasizing
words and pictures. Let them be as they are, like breezes flowing gently through the air.
A breeze naturally disappears. No force is needed.

As you are resting, notice that pain is like any other object. It shows up as thoughts,
emotions, and sensations that seem welded together. You can actually look and see
subtle mental images or pictures of the particular body part that is experiencing pain.

These pictures are memories of the body part, not the sensation of pain itself. Relax your
emphasizing of those pictures. The picture will either morph into other pictures or
dissolve away on their own.

Whether they change or dissolve, you can begin to see that pain is not fixed and solid.
Pain can even start to appear emptier and more transparent as the stories, words, and
pictures are emphasized less and emotions and resistance to pain are allowed to come
and go freely and uninterruptedly.

In observing these appearances while resting in awareness, the mental and emotional
suffering around the pain can relax. You might even experience a reduction in pain. But
do not make pain reduction a goal. The very act of trying to get rid of pain is seeking. It
is resistance. Resistance can actually appear to increase pain. Simply relax and notice
what is happening. Gently observe but don’t emphasize the words, pictures, sensations,
and emotions that arise and fall.

As you see that you are not a self center with a story of pain, and that pain is arising
directly and presently to awareness, the need to be defined by either the pain or the
story naturally relaxes. This is not to say that you shouldn’t treat the pain if that’s what is
required. This is not about avoiding action or not taking medical advice or appropriate
measures.
