求められる今。何か知性を超えたものを信じたい気持ちを、多くの人が抱いている
のではないでしょうか？私自身は、浄土真宗の信者であり、仏教を勉強している身
ですが、今回から、「近代神学の父」と呼ばれるフリードリヒ・シュライアマハーの
不朽の名著「宗教について」を紹介しながら、困難な時期を乗り越える知恵を探して

翻訳なので、英語版との間に多少の違いがあることをご了承下さい)。
Now is the time even entitled “After Corona,” which is asking for the transformation of
our past values. Many people might feel pulled toward a belief in something beyond
intellect. As for myself, belonging to Jodo Shinshu denomination, I am learning the
Buddhist teachings. Yet from this weblog, I would like to introduce “On Religion,”
a timeless masterpiece of Friedrich Schleiermacher who is called “Father of Modern
Liberal Theology” and seek some wisdom to overcome this difficult time――more to
come both in English and in Japanese(I hope you will understand that there are some
differences between the English version and the Japanese one because the Japanese one
is translated from the first German edition).
It is the inner, irresistible necessity of my nature; it is a divine calling; it is that which
determines my place in the universe and makes me the being I am. Even if it were neither
suitable nor prudent to speak of religion, the thing that thus drives me crushes these
petty notions with its heavenly power.
これから私が語りたいと考えていることは、私の本性から来る不可避的で、内的必然性
をもったことなのです。それはいわば神的召命なのです。それは宇宙における私の位置
を定めるものであり、私を私自身にするものなのです。ですから、宗教について語る
ということは、今日のような状況の中では適切ではありませんし、望まれていること
でもないのかもしれませんが、何か私に迫ってくるものがあり、人間を越えるような
強大な力が私を促し、私の心に浮かぶ小さな心の迷いをみな押しつぶしてしまうの
です。
But I add that it also shows the greatest contempt for religion to wish to transplant it into
another realm and expect it to serve and work there. It would not even want to reign in
a foreign kingdom, for it is not so desirous of conquest that it wishes to enlarge what is
its own.
私がここで付け加えたいことは、たとえ宗教が別の領域でも役立ち、働くことができる
からと言っても、宗教をどこか別の領域へと移すことは、宗教に対する最大の侮辱
ということになるということです。宗教は、他の領域を支配しようなどとは思わないの
です。
What I assert and what I should like to establish for religion include the following: It
springs necessarily and by itself from the interior of every better soul, it has its own
province in the mind in which it reigns sovereign, and it is worthy of moving the noblest
and the most excellent by means of its innermost power and by having its innermost
essence known by them.
私は、宗教というのは、人々の個々の優れた心の中から必然的に、自ら湧き上がって
くるものであり、宗教が無制約的に支配する固有の領域というのは個々の心情の中に
あること、また宗教は高貴で優れた人々を感動させ、彼らの内的な本質にふさわしい
ものとして認識されるだけの価値のあるものだということを主張したいのですし、また
一歩進んでそのように断言したいのです。
