求められる今。何か知性を超えたものを信じたい気持ちを、多くの人が抱いている
のではないでしょうか？「近代神学の父」と呼ばれるフリードリヒ・シュライアマハー
が、不朽の名著「宗教について」の中で最も強調したいこと――バイリンガルで、

Now is the time even entitled “After Corona,” which is asking for the transformation of
our past values. Many people might feel pulled toward a belief in something beyond
intellect. What Friedrich Schleiermacher, who is called “Father of Modern Liberal
Theology,” wants to emphasize in his timeless masterpiece “On Religion“――more to
come both in English and in Japanese (I hope you will understand that there are some
differences between the English version and the Japanese one because the Japanese one
is translated from the first German edition).
Religion does not wish to determine and explain the universe according to its nature as
does metaphysics; it does not desire to continue the universe’s development and perfect
it by the power of freedom and the divine free choice of a human being as does morals.
宗教は形而上学のように、宇宙をその本性に基づいて規定したり、説明することを
望みません。また道徳のように、自由の力や人間のあたかも神になったかのような
勝手な意識から宇宙を形成したり、完成させようとも願いません。
Religion’s essence is neither thinking nor acting, but intuition and feeling. It wishes to
intuit the universe, wishes devoutly to overhear the universe’s own manifestations and
actions, longing to be grasped and filled by the universe’s immediate influences in
childlike passivity.
宗教の本質とは、思惟でも行動でもなく、それは直観と感情なのです。宗教は、宇宙を
直観しようとするものであり、宇宙に固有なさまざまな表現と動きに対して、畏敬の念
をもってそれに耳を傾け、子供のように受身な態度で、宇宙の直接的な影響に
とらえられよう、あるいは満たされようとするものなのです。
I entreat you to become familiar with this concept: intuition of the universe. It is the
hinge of my whole speech; it is the highest and most universal formula of religion on the
basis of which you should be able to find every place in religion, from which you may
determine its essence and its limits.
宇宙を直観する。私はみなさんにぜひこの概念に親しんでいただきたいのです。
なぜならこの概念こそが、私の全講話の要だからです。これは宗教のもっとも普遍的
で、もっとも高貴な形式なのです。みなさんはそこから、宗教のどのような場所をも
見出すことができますし、またそこから宗教の本質や限界をもっとも厳密に規定する
ことができるのです。
What you intuit and perceive is not the nature of things, but their action upon you. What
you know or believe about the nature of things lies far beyond the realm of intuition.
みなさんが直観でき、知覚できるものというのは、事物の本性ではなく、みなさんに
対する事物の働きかけなのです。みなさんがそれについて知ったり、信じたりすること
ができるものというのは、直観の領域から遠く隔たった向こう側にあるのです。
The same is true of religion. The universe exists in uninterrupted activity and reveals itself
to us every moment. Every form that it brings forth, every being to which it gives
separate existence according to the fullness of life, every occurrence that spills forth from
its rich, ever-fruitful womb, is an action of the same upon us.
宗教もそうなのです。宇宙は不休の活動を続けており、私たちにそれぞれの瞬間に
その姿を明らかにしています。宇宙が生み出すどのような形式も、生命の充足の度合い
に従って宇宙から個々の存在に与えられるどのような本質も、さらには豊かに、そして
恒常的に宇宙という母胎が生み出しているどのような出来事も、宇宙の私たちに対する
働きかけなのです。
Thus to accept everything individual as a part of the whole and everything limited as
a representation of the infinite is religion.
ですからあらゆる個別的なものを全体の部分として、またあらゆる制約されたものを
無限の表現として受け取ること、それが宗教なのです。
