Now is the time even entitled “After Corona,” which is asking for the transformation of
our past values. Many people might feel pulled toward a belief in something beyond
intellect. Friedrich Schleiermacher, who is called “Father of Modern Liberal Theology,”
gives us commentaries on what makes a person want to love someone, while talking
about humanity, love, and the universe――more to come both in English and in
Japanese (I hope you will understand that there are some differences between the
English version and the Japanese one because the Japanese one is translated from the
first German edition).

But what are love and resistance? What are individuality and oneness? Did you get these
concepts, by mean of which nature first actually becomes for you an intuition of the
world, from nature?

Do they not derive originally from the interior of the mind, and are they not first directed
from there to nature? Therefore, it is also the mind to which religion actually looks and
from which it takes intuition of the world; the universe is portrayed in the inner life, and
only through the internal is the external comprehensible.

In order to intuit the world and to have religion, man must first have found humanity,
and he finds it only in love and through love. This is why humanity and religion are
deeply and indissolubly connected, longing for religion is what helps him to the
enjoyment of religion.

Each person embraces most ardently the one in whom the world is reflected most clearly
and purely; each loves most tenderly the one in whom he believes he finds everything
brought together that he himself lacks for the completion of humanity. Therefore, let us
repair to humanity, that we may find the material for religion.

Here even you are in your most proper and beloved homeland. Your innermost life opens
up in you. You see before yourselves the goal of all your striving and action, and
simultaneously feel the inner drive of your powers, which constantly leads you toward
that goal.

Humanity itself is actually the universe for you, and you count everything else a part of
this only to the extent that it comes into connection with humanity or surrounds it.

I do not wish to lead you beyond this point of view; but it has often pained me deeply
that, with all your love for humanity and all your zeal for it, you are nevertheless always
embroiled and at odds with it.

You labor to improve and educate it, each of you in his own manner, and in the end you
disgruntledly leave behind whatever fails to produce the desired result.

I may say, this also comes from your lack of religion. You wish to have an effect on
humanity, and you look at individual person. These displease you greatly; and among the
thousand causes of your displeasure this is without doubt the most beautiful and one
that belongs to the better among you: that in your own way you are entirely too moral.
You take people individually, and thus you also have an ideal of an individual to which,
however, they do not correspond.

All of this together is a wrong beginning, and you will find yourselves far better off with
religion.

If you would only attempt to interchange the objects of your action and intuition! Act on
the individuals, but with your contemplation rise higher on the wings of religion to
an infinite, undivided humanity.

Seek it in every individual, look upon the existence of each as a revelation of it to you,
and there can remain no trace of all that now oppresses you.

I too, know how to pride myself on a moral disposition, I also know how to value human
excellence, and, considered by themselves, common things can almost overwhelm me
with the unpleasant feeling of disdain; but religion gives me an exceedingly great and
splendid view of all.
