Now is the time even entitled “After Corona,” which is asking for the transformation of
our past values. Many people might feel pulled toward a belief in something beyond
intellect. Friedrich Schleiermacher, who is called “Father of Modern Liberal Theology,”
gives us commentaries on the reason why one who has been awakened by religion
would like to convey it to someone in terms of the nature of it――more to come both in
English and in Japanese (I hope you will understand that there are some differences
between the English version and the Japanese one because the Japanese one is
translated from the first German edition).

Once there is religion, it must necessarily also be social. That not only lies in human
nature but also in preeminently in the nature of religion.

You must admit that it is highly unnatural for a person to want to lock up in himself what
he has created and worked out. In the continuous reciprocity, which is not only practical
but also intellectual, in which he stands with the rest of his species, he is supposed to
express and communicate all that is in him.

The more passionately something moves him, and the more intimately it penetrates his
being, the stronger is the urge also to glimpse its power outside himself in others, in
order to prove to himself that he has encountered nothing other than what is human.

How should he keep to himself the influences of the universe that appear to him as
greatest and most irresistible? How should he wish to retain within himself that which
most strongly forces him out of himself and which, like nothing else, impresses him with
the fact that he cannot know himself in and of himself alone.

Rather, his first endeavor, when a religious view has become clear to him or a pious
feeling penetrates his soul, is also to direct others to the object and, if possible, to
communicate the vibrations of his mind to them.

If, therefore, urged by his own nature, religious man necessarily speaks, it is the very
nature that also provides hearers for him. With no type of thinking and sentiment does
man have such a vivid feeling of his complete incapability ever to exhaust its object as
with religion.

His sense of it has no sooner opened up than he also feels its infinity and his limitations;
he is conscious of encompassing only a small part of religion, and what he cannot attain
immediately he wants at least to perceive through another medium.

Therefore, every expression of religion interests him, and seeking his complement listens
attentively to every tone that he recognizes as religious. This is how mutual
communication organizes itself; thus speaking, and hearing are equally indispensable for
everyone.
