To sum up all that we’ve discussed, I feel there is tremendous convergence and
a potential for mutual enrichment through dialogue between the Buddhist and Christian
traditions, especially in the areas of ethics and spiritual practice, such as the practice of
compassion, love, meditation, and the enhancement of tolerance. And I feel that this
dialogue could go very far and reach a deep level of understanding.
要約すると、慈悲や愛や瞑想や寛容の修行のような、倫理的・霊的な修行の分野では
とくに、仏教とキリスト教の対話はうまく話がかみあって、おたがいを豊かにできる
可能性があると、私は思っています。そして、この対話によって、とても深いレベル

But when it comes to a philosophical or metaphysical dialogue I feel that we must part
company. The entire Buddhist worldview is based on a philosophical standpoint in which
the central thought is the principle of interdependence, how all things and events come
into being purely as a result of interactions between causes and conditions.
しかし、哲学や形而上学についての対話となると、袂を分かたねばならないと思います
よ。仏教の世界観はすべて、縁起の理法を中心にすえた哲学の観点から、ものごとを
見ています。ここでいう縁起の理法とは、すべての事象は、原因と条件の相互作用の
結果としてのみ存在する、という考え方です。
Within that philosophical worldview it is almost impossible to have any room for
an atemporal, eternal, absolute truth. Nor it is possible to accommodate the concept of
a divine Creation. Similarly, for a Christian whose entire metaphysical worldview is based
on a belief that the Creation and a divine Creator, the idea that all things and events arise
out of mere interaction between causes and conditions has no place within that worldview. So in the realm of metaphysics it becomes problematic as a certain point, and
the two traditions must diverge.
この哲学的世界観では、無時間で永遠の絶対的真理の存在などという考えは、ほとんど
不可能です。また、神による天地創造の概念も、受け入れることはできません。同様
に、クリスチャンの形而上学的世界観はすべて、天地創造と創造主を基にしているの
ですから、あらゆる事象は原因と条件の相互作用だけによって起こる、という縁起の
考え方なんかは、とうてい受け入れられないでしょう。形而上学の領域の問題に
なると、こんなふうにあるところまでくると、仏教とキリスト教の両伝統は、
はっきりと袂を分かつようになるのです。
However, I do feel that dialogue could promote a better understanding and mutual
respect in the area of ethics, conduct, and metaphysics――in other words, in the area in
which there are many diversities and differences.
しかしそうは言っても、倫理や行動規範や形而上学といった分野、つまり、多くの
相似点と両立可能性があると同時に、たくさんの多様性と違いのある分野でもさえも、
対話によって理解を深め。たがいの敬意を育てることは可能だと思います。
This can be easily appreciated in the area of ethics and conduct, in which there are many
similarities and parallels that could enrich the dialogue and give rise to better
understanding and mutual reverence. Even in the case of the metaphysical realm, where
there are fundamental differences, through dialogue it is possible to transcend those
differences by clearly recognizing that those differences exist and yet simultaneously
appreciating their common ground in terms of their purpose and effectiveness.
倫理と行動規範の分野では、たくさんの類似や相似があり、対話を豊かにし、よりよい
理解とたがいへの敬意をもたらすことが簡単にできます。そして、おたがいに根本的な
違いのある形而上学の分野においても、対話をとおして、それらの違いの存在を
はっきりと認識し、同時にそこにひそんでいる目的や効果という面での共通性を認める
ことによって、違いを乗り越えていくことも可能だと思います。
While the Christian and Buddhist metaphysical standpoints seem so far apart, they can
both lead to the creation of similarly good human beings, who are spiritually mature and
ethically sound. Hence, these differences need not divide us.
キリスト教と仏教の形而上学の立場は大きく離れているように見えながら、どちらも
霊的に成熟し、倫理的にも健全な、善い人間をつくることにつながるのです。
ですから、こういう違いがあるからといって、別れることはありません。
