宗教に関心がある人なら誰でも「救い」について考えたことがあると思います。仏教と
キリスト教。それぞれの観点から見た「救い」について、ダライ・ラマが解説して
います――バイリンカルで、どうぞ。
I assume that every person who is interested in religion must have given a thought to
“salvation.” Buddhism and Christianity: from the respective point of view, Dalai Lama
gives us commentaries on “salvation” ――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Jesus proclaimed: “To believe in me, is not to believe in me but in him who sent me; to
see me, is to see him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that no one
who has faith in me should remain in darkness. But if anyone hears my words and
disregard them, I am not his judge; I have not come to judge the world, but to save the
world.
イエスは叫んで、こう言われた。「わたしを信じる者は、わたしを信じるのでは
なくて、わたしを遣わされた方を信じるのである。わたしを見る者は、わたしを
遣わされた方を見るのである。わたしを信じる者が、だれも暗闇の中にとどまることの
ないように、わたしは光として世に来た。わたしの言葉を聞いて、それを守らない者が
いても、わたしはその者を裁かない。わたしは、世を裁くためではなく、世を救うため
に来たからである。
There is a judge for anyone who rejects me and does not accept my words; the word
I have spoken will be his judge in the last day. I do not speak on my own authority, but
the Father who sent me has himself commanded me what to say and how to speak.
I know that his commands are eternal life. What the Father has said to me, therefore, that
is what I speak.
[John 12:44-50]
わたしを拒み、わたしの言葉を受け入れない者に対しては、裁くものがある。わたしの
語った言葉が、終わりの日にその者を裁く。なぜなら、わたしは自分勝手に語ったの
ではなく、わたしをお遣わしになった父が、わたしの言うべきこと、語るべきことを
お命じになったからである。父の命令は永遠の命であることを、わたしは知っている。
だから、わたしが語ることは、父がわたしに命じられたままに語っているのである。
In this Gospel passage, there is a reference to light dispelling darkness, which is
immediately followed by a reference to salvation. To connect these two ideas, I would say
that the darkness of ignorance is dispelled by true salvation, the state of liberation. In this
way it is possible to understand the meaning of salvation even in the Christian context.
この『福音書』の一節では、闇を追い払う光について語られたすぐあとに、救いに
ついて書かれています。この二つの概念が結び付けられているのは、無知の暗闇が、
真の救いである解脱の状態によって追い払われることになるからだ、と思います。こう
考えれば、キリスト教の文脈においてさえも、こういうやり方で、救いの意味を理解
することは可能になるでしょう。
Determining the exact nature of salvation is a complex issue. Among the various religious
schools of thought in ancient India, there were many religious traditions that accepted
some form of the notion of salvation.
救いということの正確な本質を決定するのは、とても難しい問題をはらんでいるよう
です。古代インドにはさまざまな宗教の学派があり、救いの概念を何らかのかたちで
受け入れた宗教もたくさんありました。
The Tibetan word for salvation is tharpa, which means “release” or “freedom.” Other
traditions do not subscribe to such notions. Some schools maintain that the delusions of
the mind are inherent and intrinsic and are thus part of the essential nature of the mind.
救いを表わすチベット語は、「解放」とか「自由」を意味するタルパ(tharpa)という
言葉です。救いの概念に同意しない、教えの伝統もあります。心の迷いは生来のもので
心にもともと備わっているものだ、だから心の本質の一部分なのだ、と主張する派も
あります。
In their view, there is no possibility of liberation because negativities and delusions are
inherent to the mind and cannot be separated from it. Even among those who accept
some ideas of salvation, or liberation, there are differences between the actual definitions
or characterizations of the actual state of salvation. For example, in certain ancient Indian
schools the state of salvation is described more in terms of an external space or
environment with positive characteristics, shaped like an upturned parasol.
その考え方では、否定性や迷いや錯覚は、心に本来備わったものとして、心から
切り離すことはできないので、解放などを考えるのは無意味となります。救いや解放を
部分的に受け入れる学派の間でも、実際に救いとはどんな状態なのか、その定義や特徴
づけはまったく一定していません。たとえば、古代インドのある派では、救いの状態
を、逆さにしたパラソルのような形の明確な特徴をもった空間的環境として、
描きだそうとしています。
However, while certain Buddhist traditions may accept the notion of salvation, they view
it more in terms of a person’s individual spiritual or mental state, a state of perfection of
the mind, rather than in terms of an external environment. Buddhism does accept the
notion of different pure lands of the buddhas, pure states that come into being as
a result of the positive karmic potentials of the individual.
しかし、救いの概念を受け入れる仏教の宗派では、外の世界の環境として実現される
ものとしてよりも、それを個人の霊性ないし心の完成した状態として見ています。仏教
ではブッダの浄土という概念を、受け入れています。人のカルマの良い潜在力の
あらわれとして出現する、純粋な状態としての浄土が、いくつもあると考えているの
です。
It is even possible that ordinary people can be reborn and participate in the buddha’s
pure lands. For example, from a Buddhist point of view, our physical environment――this
earth or planet――cannot be said to be a perfected realm of existence. But within this
realm one can say that there are individuals who have attained nirvana and full
enlightenment. According to Buddhism, salvation or liberation should be understood in
terms of an internal state, a state of mental development.
ただの人が生まれ変わって、ブッダの浄土の一員として迎えられるなどということ
さえ、可能です。たとえば、仏教徒の見解では、この地球や惑星のような物理環境は、
けっして完全なものではありません。しかし、そういう環境の中でも、涅槃にたどり
着き、悟りを得た者があらわれることも可能なのです。仏教では、救いや解放を、内的
な状態として、心の発達の状態として、理解しようとしてきました。
