What is the relationship between love and faith? Thich Nhat Hanh, an evangelist for
mindfulness, gives us commentaries on this――more to come both in English and in
Japanese.
Love is a kind of energy. In the Buddhist tradition, we can identify the nature of energy.
We can recognize it when it is there. When love is not true love we are able to know that
it is not true love. But when it is true love we are able to recognize it as true love. This is
one of our practices.
愛はひとつのエネルギーです。仏教の練修によって、そのエネルギーの本性を明らかに
することができます。愛のエネルギーがここにあれば、これが愛だと認識できるの
です。偽りの愛と真実の愛の違いを見わけられるようになるのが、私たちの練修の成果
です。
Love here can also be described as faith, because faith is a source of energy that can
sustain us, that can give us strength. Love and faith are also something to cultivate. They
are not just ideas or the commitment to a number od concepts and dogmas. Love is
a living thing, faith also.
この愛は信仰 (信力) とも言われます。信仰は私たちを下から支え、力を与えてくれる
エネルギーだからです。愛と信仰もまた育てるべきものです。それらはただの考えでは
ありませんし、概念やドグマに傾倒することでもありません。愛は生きものであり、
信仰も生きものです。
In the process of love you learn a lot. You love better, you make fewer mistakes. You are
more capable of being happy and making other people happy. That develops your faith
in your ability to love. So faith is made of very concrete elements――it is made of your
true spiritual experience, your experience in your daily life. And faith here is not being
caught in an idea or a dogma or a doctrine.
愛の道ゆきにはたくさんの学びがあります。上手に愛せるようになり、あやまちも
減って、自分がもっと幸せになり、他の人たちをも幸せにすることができるように
なります。愛する力があれば、信仰が開花します。信仰をつくりあげている要素は、
真の霊的体験や日々の暮らしのなかでの体験といった具体的なもので、思想、ドグマ、
教理などにとらわれることではありません。
Faith is the outcome of your life. It grows. As faith continues to grow, you continue to get
the energy because faith is also energy like love. If we look deeply into the nature of love,
we will also see our faith. When we have faith in us, we are no longer afraid of anything.
信仰は人生の果実で、成長するものです。信仰もまた愛と同じエネルギーなので、信仰
が成長するにつれて、あなたに力が湧いてきます。愛の本質を深く見つめれば、自分の
なかの信仰の力が見えてくるでしょう。内に信仰があれば、もはや何ものも恐れるもの
はなくなります。
People who do not believe in anything are those who suffer the most. They don’t see
anything beautiful, or true, or good. They are in complete confusion. That is the utmost
kind of suffering. They might suffer more deeply than any others we might encounter.
何も信じられない人は、もっとも苦しむ人です。美しいものも、真実のものも、善き
ものも、何も見えなくなり、完全に混乱して、極限の苦しみを味わいます。彼らの
苦しみは、私たちが出会うどんな人よりも、さらに深いものであるかもしれません。
When we don’t believe in anything, you become sort of a wandering soul; you don’t
know where to go or what to do. You don’t see any meaning in being alive. Because of
that, you may try to destroy yourself physically and mentally. And there are so many
ways of self-destruction available today.
何も信じない人は、さまよえる魂のような存在です。どこに行くべきか、何をすべきか
を知らず、生きている意味も見いだせません。肉体的にも精神的にも自己破滅に向かい
ます。そして今日ほど、自己破滅への道が用意された時代はないのです。
