現代社会の仕組みは、私たち人間を根底から変えてしまい、「愛すること」を困難に
してしまっていると言います。「自由からの逃走」など数々の名著で知られる心理学者
エーリッヒ・フロムの解説に耳を傾けてみましょう――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
It is said that the system of contemporary society has fundamentally transformed us,
human beings, to have difficulty in “love.” Let’s listen to the commentaries of Erich
Fromm who is a psychologist well-known for his masterpieces such as “Escape from
Freedom.”――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Equality had meant, in a religious context, that we are all God’s children, that we all share
in the same human-divine substance, that we are all one. It meant also that the very
differences between individuals must be respected, that while it is true that we are all
one, it is also true that each one of us is a unique entity, is a cosmos by itself.
かつて宗教の世界では、平等といったら、われわれはみな神の子であり、誰もが同じ
人間としての高貴な資質をそなえており、われわれはみな同じひとりの人間である、
という意味だった。それはまた同時に、個人と個人のちがいは尊重されなければ
ならない、われわれがそれぞれひとりの人間であることは確かだが、それと同時に
われわれ一人ひとりは唯一無二の存在であり、それ自体がひとつの宇宙である、という
意味でもあった。
Such conviction of the uniqueness of the individual is expressed for instance in the
Talmudic statement: “Whosoever saves a single life is as if he had saved the whole world;
whosoever destroys a single life is as if he had destroyed the whole world.”
個人はそれぞれ唯一無二だというこの確信は、たとえば次のようなタルムード
(ユダヤ教の聖典) の言葉にもあらわれている。「ひとつの生命を救うものは全世界を
救ったも同然だ。ひとつの生命を滅ぼす者は全世界を滅ぼしたも同然である」
In contemporary capitalistic society the meaning of equality has been transformed. By
equality one refers to the equality of automatons; of men who have lost their
individuality. Equality today means “sameness,” rather than “oneness.” It is the sameness
of abstractions, of the men who work in the same jobs, who have the same amusements,
who read the same newspapers, who have the same feelings and the same ideas.
現代の資本主義社会では、平等の意味は変わってきている。今日、平等といえば、
それはロボットの、すなわち個性を失った人間の平等である。現代では平等は「一体」
ではなく「同一」を意味する。それは、同じ仕事をし、同じ趣味をもち、同じ新聞を
読み、同じ感情や考えをもつといった、さまざまなちがいを切り捨てた同一性である。
In this respect one must also look with some skepticism at some achievements which are
usually praised as signs of our progress, such as the equality of women. Needless to say I
am not speaking against the equality of women; but the positive aspects of this tendency
for equality must not deceive one. It is part of the trend toward the elimination of
differences. Equality is bought at this very price: women are equal because they are not
different any more.
この点からすると、男女平等のような、ふつうわれわれの進歩の象徴として賞賛されて
いることがらも、多少は懐疑の目をもって見る必要がある。もちろん私は男女平等に
反対ではない。私の言いたいのは、平等志向の肯定的な面にばかり目を奪われては
いけないということだ。平等志向も、差異をなくそうとする風潮のあらわれである。
残念ながら、男女平等が広がったために、男女が平等なのは男女にちがいがないから
だ、という思いこみが生まれた。
The proposition of Enlightenment philosophy, l’ âme n’ a pas de sexe, the soul has no sex,
has become the general practice. The polarity of the sexes is disappearing, and with it
erotic love, which is based on polarity. Men and women become the same, not equals as
opposite poles.
啓蒙主義哲学が唱えた「魂に性別はない」(l’ âme n’ a pas de sexe) という主張はいまや
広く普及した。性の二極性は消えつつある。だがそれとともに、この二極性に
もとづいた恋愛も消えつつある。かくして男女は、両極的存在として平等なのでは
なく、同一になってしまった。
Contemporary society preaches this ideal of unindividualized equality because it needs
human atoms, each one the same, to make them function in a mass aggregation,
smoothly, without friction; all obeying the same commands, yet everybody being
convinced that he is following his own desires. Just as modern mass production requires
standardization of commodities, so the social process requires standardization of man,
and this standardization is called “equality.”
現代社会は、この没個性的な平等こそが理想であると説く。粒のそろった原子のような
人間が必要だからだ。そのほうが、数多く集めても摩擦なしに円滑に働かせることが
できる。全員が同じ命令にしたがっているにもかかわらず、誰もが、自分は自分の欲求
にしたがっているのだと思いこんでいる。現代の大量生産が商品の標準化を必要として
いるように、現代社会の仕組みは人間の標準化を必要としている。そしてその標準化が
「平等」と呼ばれているのだ。
From birth to death, from Monday to Monday, from morning to evening――all activities
are routinized, and prefabricated. How should a man caught in this net of routine not
forget that he is a man, a unique individual, one who is given this one chance of living,
with hopes and disappointments, with sorrow and fear, with the longing for love and the
dread of the nothing and of separateness?
誕生から死まで、日曜から土曜まで、朝から晩まで、すべての活動が型にはめられ、
あらかじめ決められている。このように型にはまった活動の網にとらわれた人間は、
以下のことを忘れてしまう――自分が人間であること、唯一無二の個人であること、
たった一度だけ生きるチャンスを与えられたこと、希望もあれば失望もあり、悲しみや
恐れ、愛への憧れや、無と孤立の恐怖もあること。
