In his relations with others, he loves kindness;
In his words, he loves sincerity;
In government, he loves peace;

In his actions, he loves choosing the right time.
It is because he does not contend
That he is without reproach.
タオの在り方にいちばん近いのは
天と地であり、
タオの働きにいちばん近いのは
水の働きなんだ。そして
タオの人がすばらしいのは
水のようだというところにある。
水ってのは
すべてのものを生かし、養う。
それでいて争わず、威張りもしない。
人の厭 (いや) がる低いところへ、先にたって行く。
水はよほどタオの働きに
近いんだ。
タオの人は、自分のいる所を、いつも
善いところと思っている。
心は、深い淵のように静かだ。
つきあう人をみんな善い人だとし、
自分の言うことは
みんな信じてもらえると考え
社会にいても
タオの働きの善さを見失わない。
その人は、手出しをしないで
あらゆる人たちの能力を充分に発揮させ、
人びとは
自分のいちばんいいタイミングで活動する。
これひと口でまとめると
争うな、ということだ。
水のように、争わなければ、
誰からも非難をうけないじゃないか。
