新渡戸稲造の「武士道」は、多くの方がそのタイトルは知っていても、原文の英語で
読み通した方は少ないかもしれません。もともとこの本が書かれた動機は「日本では
宗教教育が行われていないのに、日本人は、どうやって道徳を身につけるのか」という
新渡戸稲造に対する、ある外国人からの質問にありました。宗教あるいは道徳という面
で、世界からますます孤立化していくように見える、私たち日本人が、今こそ読むべき
書。――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
Many people might know of the title of “Bushido” written by Nitobe Inazo, but few have
read it through in the original form, in English. In the first place, a certain foreigner asked
Nitobe Inazo how the Japanese attain morality in spite of no religious education in Japan,
and that motivated him to write this book. Now it is a must-read for us, the Japanese
when we seem to be more and more isolated from the world in terms of religion or
morality. ―― more to come both in English and in Japanese.
I may begin with Buddhism. It furnished a sense of calm trust in Fate, a quiet submission
to the inevitable, that stoic composure in sight of danger or calamity, that disdain of life
and friendliness with death.
武士道の淵源をたずねるにあたって、私はまず、仏教からはじめようと思う。仏教は、
(常に心を安んじて) すべてを運命にまかせるという平常の感覚を武士道に与えた。
避けることができない運命に対しては冷静に服従するという、危険や災難に直面した
ときのストイック的な落ちつきと、生を軽んじて死に親しむ心を与えてきた。
A foremost teacher of swordsmanship, when he saw his pupil master the utmost of his
art, told him, “Beyond this my instruction must give way to Zen teaching.” “Zen” is the
Japanese equivalent for the Dhyâna, which “represents human effort to reach through
meditation zones of thought beyond the range of verbal expression.”
剣道の達人 (柳生但馬守) は、その門弟 (であった徳川三代将軍家光公) に、剣の奥義を
伝え終わったとき、「これ以上のことを教えることはできません。あとは禅に学んで
ください」と言ったという話がある。禅とは、(古代インド語の) ディヤーナの日本語訳
であり、(小泉八雲の説明にあるように) 「言葉による表現の範囲を超えた思想の領域
に、瞑想をもって自ら達しようとする人間の努力をいう」という意味である。
Its method is contemplation, and its purport, so far as I understand it, to be convinced of
a principle that underlies all phenomena, and, if it can, of the Absolute itself, and thus to
put oneself in harmony with this Absolute. Thus defined, the teaching was more than the
dogma of a sect, and whoever attains to the perception of the Absolute raises himself
above mundane things and awakes “to a new Heaven and a new Earth.”
その方法は瞑想であり、その目的とするところは、私の理解するところによれば、(この
宇宙の) すべての現象の底に存在する原理を確認し、それによって、自己を絶対的なる
ものと調和せしむることにある。このように定義すれば、禅の教えは一宗一派の教義に
とどまらず(それ以上のものであって)、人間は誰でもこの絶対的なるものを認識
できれば、俗世間のあらゆる現象を解脱して「新しい天と新しい地」に目覚めることが
できるのである。
As to strictly ethical doctrines, the teachings of Confucius were the most prolific source of
Bushido. His enunciation of the five moral relations between master and servant (the
governing and the governed), father and son, husband and wife, older and younger
brother, and between friend and friend, was but a confirmation of what the race instinct
had recognised before his writings were introduced from China.
厳正な意味における道徳的教養に関しては、孔子の教える道が、武士道のもっとも
豊かな淵源であった。孔子が説いた、君臣、父子、夫婦、長幼、朋友の、この五倫の道
は、中国よりこの聖人の教義が輸入される以前から、わが国の民族的本能が、これを
認め重んじていたことであって、孔子の教えはこれを確認したにすぎない。
The calm, benignant and worldly-wise character of his politico-ethical precepts was
particularly well suited to the samurai, who formed the ruling class. His aristocratic and
conservative tone was well adapted to the requirements of these warrior statesmen.
孔子の説く政治道徳は、平静で寛容、その上処世の知恵に富んでおり、民衆の上に立つ
武士の意によく適 (かな) った。また、孔子の説く貴族的で保守的な教えは、政治家
としての武士の要件ともよく合致した。
Next to Confucius, Mencius exercised an immense authority over Bushido. His forcible
and often quite democratic theories were exceedingly taking to sympathetic natures, and
they were even thought dangerous to, and subversive of, the existing social order, hence
his works were for a long time under censure. Still, the words of this master mind found
permanent lodgment in the heart of the samurai.
孔子についで孟子も、武士道の大きな拠り所となった。孟子の、説得力に溢れ、民主的
なところの多い教えは、多くの武士に同感されその心を動かした。その説は、既存社会
の秩序を乱し、転覆させる危険思想だとして、長い間禁書になったこともあった。
それにもかかわらず、この賢人の言葉は、武士の心から永久に離れることはなかった。
