私たちを闇から解放する光は、外側ではなく、私たちの内側にある。これこそ「仏性」
なのです――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
The light which will liberate us from the darkness is inside us, not outside us. That is just
what “Buddha nature” is―― more to come both in English and in Japanese.
But how does one detect buddhanature in the midst of so much ignorance, darkness,
and confusion? The first sign of hope for sailors lost at the sea is to catch sight of a beam
of light flashing through the stormy darkness. Navigating toward it, they come to the
source of light, the lighthouse.
しかし、これほどの無知と闇、そして混乱の真っただ中において、どうやって仏性を
見つければいいのでしょうか。海で迷った船乗りにとって最初の希望の兆しは、雨風が
吹きすさぶ暗闇の中を走るひと筋の光を見つけることです。それに向かって船を
進めれば、光の源である灯台に行き着くことができます。
Love and compassion are like the light emanating from buddhanature. Initially
buddhanature is mere concept beyond our view, but if we generate love and
compassion, we can eventually move toward it.
愛と慈悲は、仏性から発せられる光のようなものです。初めのうちは、仏性は私たちの
見方を越えた概念に過ぎません。しかし、愛と慈悲を生み出すことによって、私たちは
やがてそれに向かって進んでいくことかできます。
It may be difficult to see the buddhanature in those who are lost in the darkness of
greed, hate, and ignorance. Their buddhanature is so distant, we might think it is
nonexistent. But even within the darkest and most violent people, there are flashes of
love and compassion, however brief and faint. If these rare glimpses are attended to, and
if energy is invested to move in the direction of the light, their buddhanature can be
uncovered.
欲深さや憎しみ、無知の闇の中で迷ってしまった人の中に仏性を見いだすことは難しい
かもしれません。彼らの仏性はあまりにも遠いところにあるため、私たちはそれが存在
しないと思うかもしれません。しかし、最も邪悪で暴力的な人たちの中にさえ、いかに
短くかすかであろうとも、愛と慈悲の閃光は存在します。そういった稀なきらめきに
注意を払い、光の方向に進む努力をすれば、彼らの仏性もあらわれてくるでしょう。
Along with love and compassion, there are myriad paths available to bring us closer to
realizing buddhanature. Even if we only intellectually understand the basic goodness of
ourselves and all beings, this understanding brings us closer to accomplishment. It is as if
we have misplaced a precious diamond ring, but at least we know it is inside our treasure
chest, not lost on some vast mountainside.
愛と慈悲の他にも、仏性への気付きに近づくための道は無数にあります。自分自身や
生きとし生けるものの根本的な善性を頭で理解するだけでも、この理解が私たちを悟り
への到達に近づけてくれます。たとえるなら、大切なダイヤの指輪を失くしてしまった
としても、少なくともそれが広大な山の斜面のどこかにあるのではなく、自分の宝物箱
の中にあることを知っているようなものです。
Although we use words such as achieving, wishing, and praying for enlightenment,
ultimately we don’t acquire enlightenment from an external source. A more correct way
to put it is discovering the enlightenment that has always been there.
私たちは悟りを達成する、望む、願うといった言葉を使いますが、究極的には悟りは
自分の外側にある何かから獲得するものではありません。ずっとそこにあった悟りを
見つけるという表現のほうがより正確です。
Enlightenment is part of our true nature. Our true nature is like a golden statue; however,
it is still in its mold, which is like our defilements and ignorance. Because ignorance and
emotion are not an inherent part of our nature, just as the mold is not part of the statue,
there is such a thing as primordial purity.
悟りは私たちの本性の一部です。私たちの本性は、黄金の像のようなものです。
しかし、それはまだ鋳型の中に入ったままの状態です。そしてこの鋳型は、私たちの
けがれや無知のようなものです。鋳型が像の一部ではないように、無知や感情は私たち
の本性に本来備わっているものではありません。したがって、根本的な清らかさという
ものがあるのです。
When the mold is broken, the statue emerges. When our defilements are removed, our
true buddhanature is revealed. But it is important to understand that buddhanature is
not a divine, truly existing soul or essence.
鋳型が壊されれば、像が現れます。私たちのけがれが取り除かれれば、真の仏性が
明らかになります。しかし、仏性は神聖な、真に存在する魂や霊的存在ではないという
ことを理解しておく必要があります。
