智慧の人、ブッダがあえて答えなかった質問があります。答えなかった理由が、非常に
深い――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
There are the questions which the Buddha, a man of wisdom, did not answer on purpose.
The reason why he did not is very profound―― more to come both in English and in
Japanese.
“I do not teach theory, the Buddha said, “I analyse.” He refused to answer questions that
would feed either the tendency to cling to some kind of absolute romanticized ideal or
that would enable nihilistic distancing, the two trends that are subsumed under the
headings of existence and nonexistence and that become the basis for many powerful
religious, psychological, and philosophical dogmas.
ブッダは、「私は理論を教えるのではなく、分析する」と言いました。ブッダは、
ある種の絶対的で理想化された観念にしがみつく傾向を助長するような質問、
虚無主義的になって距離をとることを許すような質問に答えることを拒みました。この
二つの流れは、存在と非存在というタイトルにまとめられ、多くの宗教や心理学や哲学
にとって強固な教義の土台となります。
There were, in fact, fourteen subjects that the Buddha repeatedly refused to discuss, all of
them searching for absolute certainty:
実際に、ブッダが何度も議論を拒んだ14の主題 (無記) があります。それらのすべてが、
絶対的な確実性を捜し求めるものでした。それらは以下の通りです。
1 Whether the world is eternal, or not, or both, or neither.
2 Whether the world is finite (in space), or infinite, or both, or neither.
3 Whether an enlightened being exists after death, or does not, or both, or neither.
4 Whether the soul is identical with the body or different from it.
1世界は永遠か、そうではないか、その両方か、そのいずれでもないか。
2世界は (空間的に) 有限か、無限か、その両方か、そのいずれでもないか。
3 悟った存在は死後に存在するか、しないか、その両方か、そのいずれでもないか。
4 魂は身体と同一か、身体とは別なものか。
The Buddha taught that to attempt a definitive answer to these questions would give the
wrong idea, that to do so would only feed the tendency to cling to an absolute or to
nihilistically reject, neither of which he found useful.
ブッダは、これらの質問に決定的な答えを与えてしまうと、誤った概念を植えつける
ことになり、そうすることは、絶対的なものにしがみつくか、虚無的に拒絶するか、
という傾向を助長することになるだけであろう、と教えました。彼はそのどちらも役に
立たないことを悟ったのです。
He never taught the existence of a true self, nor did he ever support the idea of a chaotic
universe in which “nothing matters” and individual actions are of no importance. Rather,
he encouraged a consistent doubting of all fixed assumptions about the nature of things.
彼は、本当の自己が存在すると教えたこともありませんでしたし、個人的行為が重要性
を持たない、「どうでもいい」混沌とした宇宙観を支持したこともありませんでした。
むしろ、ブッダは、ものごとの本質に関するどのような固定的仮設をも、徹底して
疑ってみるように勧めました。
In a teaching that he gave to a skeptical follower named Malunkyaputta, he likened the
asking of questions about the ultimate nature of things to a man wounded by an arrow
refusing to have the arrow taken out until all of his questions about who the assassin
was, where he came from, what he looked like, what kind of bow he was using, and what
make of arrow had been shot had been addressed. “That man would die,
Malunkyaputta,” emphasized the Buddha, “without ever having learnt this.”
ブッダは、マールンキャプッタという懐疑的な信奉者に対する教えの中で、ものごとの
究極的本質に関する質問を問うことを次のような男に喩えています。矢に射られて
傷ついたある男が、誰が私を殺そうとしたのか、その刺客はどこから来たのか、その
刺客はどんな容姿をしているか、どんな弓を使ったのか、放たれた矢は何でできていた
のか、こうした疑問へのすべての回答が得られるまでは矢を抜いてもらうことを拒んだ
とします。「マールンキャプッタよ、その男は答えを知ることなく死んでしまう
だろう」と、ブッダは強調しました。
