仏教を学び始めた人の多くが、ブッダが人生の「苦しみ」から、その教えを説き始める
ことから、悲観主義ではないか、という感想を抱くようです。でも、仏教を知れば
知るほど、それが事実でないことがわかる――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
Many beginners learning Buddhism seem to have feelings that it is pessimistic because
the Buddha started his teachings with “suffering” in life. However, the more you learn
Buddhism, the more you recognize that it is not true――more to come both in English
and in Japanese.
What does the fourth principle, “Life is fundamentally Good” mean?
With the right attitude or view, and despite the bumps, I can find much joy and meaning
in my life. At times, though life seems bleak, I can make things brighter by remembering
the Buddhist teachings. The Buddha tells us, “With our minds we make the world.” He is
saying that life is very much what you choose to make it,
“Life is fundamentally Good.” (人生は根本的によいものである) の「G」は「BIIG」の
「G」に当たります。私たちは、正しい態度や考え方を持つことにより、苦難があるに
せよ、人生に喜びと意味を見つけることができるということです。時として人生は荒涼
としていても、仏教を思い出すことで物事をより明るくとらえることができます。釈尊
は『法句経』に「私たちの心によって世界は創られている」と述べています。これは
人生とは多分に、自分自身が選んでつくっていくべきものだという意味です。
In a well-known Buddhist metaphor, water appears differently
according to the perceiver. To the hungry ghosts (those with meager awareness,
beset by never-satisfied desires), the water is phlegm and pus; for a fish it is an abode and for a human something to drink.
仏教でよく知られている「一水四見」という喩えですが、水はそれを見る人によって
違って見えます。餓鬼 (満足することのない欲望の世界に閉じ込められた智慧の
足りない者) には痰 (たん) や膿 (うみ) に見え、魚には棲処 (すみか) に見え、人間には
飲み物に見えるのです。
However, for a Bodhisattva who has realized deep awareness and compassion for others,
the water is a bed of shimmering jewels! There is only one object, but there are four
levels of awareness. The more we foster Bodhisattva awareness,
the more we experience our lives as “fundamentally good”!
しかし天人には、水はきらめく宝石に飾られた池に見えるのです。対象はたった一つ
でも四段階の見方があるというのです。天人のような見方をすればするほど、私たちの
生活は「根本的には素晴らしい」ものとなるのです。
