Is it like a relationship between ice and water? ――more to come both in English
and in Japanese.
In a similar passage, Shinran also states:
Obstructions of karmic evil turn into virtues; It is like the relation of ice and water:
The more the ice, the more the water; The more the obstructions, the more the virtues.
Here, “obstructions of karmic evil” refer to defiled passions or the karma generated
by our evil offenses. They obstruct our attainment of enlightenment. Yet those
very obstructions, just as they are, become the very substance of virtue,
which is the life and enlightenment of the Buddha.
そしてもうひとつ、同じく親鸞の言葉でありますが、
罪障功徳 (ざいしょうくどく) の体となる、氷と水のごとくにて、氷多きに水多し、
障 (さわ) り多きに徳多し (『高僧和讃』)
とも明かしております。その罪障とは、煩悩、罪悪をいい、それが仏となるための障害
になることにより罪障といいますが、それがそのまま功徳、仏の生命、さとりの本体、
本質になるというのです。
It is just like the relationship between ice and water, Shinran declares. The more ice
that there is, the more water there will be when the ice melts. In the same way,
the more defiled passions and obstructions of karmic evil that we possess,
the greater will be the life and enlightenment of the Buddha.
それはあたかも氷と水の関係のようなもので、氷が多ければ多いほど、それが溶けると
水が多い。それと同じように、煩悩、罪障が多ければ多いほど、仏の生命、その菩提は
多い、というわけです。
Our lives and karmic evil, and the Buddha’s life and enlightenment, are like ice and
water, respectively. Through the sun’s activity, the ice melts and turns into water.
In exactly the same way, when the light of Amida Buddha’s wisdom illuminates
our lives, the ice of our delusions and karmic evil melts and becomes, just as it is,
the water of the Buddha’s life and enlightenment.
太陽の働きが加わるならば、氷は溶けて水になる。それと同じように私の生命に、
阿弥陀仏の慈悲の光明がとどけば、その迷いの生命、罪業の氷は溶けて、そのまま仏の
生命、菩提の水となるのです。
Hence, Shinran says, “The more the ice, the more the water.” The deeper our
karmic evil, the greater the life of the Buddha will be. As I mentioned before,
the deeper we dig down into the ground, the more clean water will gush forth
from the earth. Or the harder that one strikes a ball toward the ground, the higher
the ball will fly up into the sky in the opposite direction.
そして氷が多ければ多いほど水は多い。罪業が深ければ深いほど仏の生命は大きい。
そのことはすでに上に申したように、大地を掘れば掘るほど、美しい水がわき出る
ように、またボールを大地に向かって、強くたたきつければつけるほど、そのボールは
逆に高くはね上がるようなものです。
Relating this to shinjin again, the more we realize the depth of our own deluded
thinking and karmic evil, the more we will awaken, with gratitude and joy,
to the greatness and strength of Amida Buddha’s compassionate Vow,
which works for each of us.
そのことはまた、私がその信心において、いっそう深く自分の迷妄、罪業を自覚すれば
するほど、この私にかけられている、阿弥陀仏の本願、慈悲の大きさ、強さが、
いっそうありがたく、嬉しく思いあたってくるということであります。
