I would like to introduce the (whole) words of “Lao-tsū,” the essence of the Eastern thought, which Alan Watts, a 60’s charisma, quotes with respect in his book. I would like to post the English translation by Le Guin, a famous sci-fi writer, and the Japanese translation by Shozo Kajima ―more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Ethics are then subordinate to spontaneity as in Lao-tsū’s description of the ascending levels of natural order:
The model [or law]of man is the earth;
The model of the earth is heaven;
The model of heaven is the Tao;
The model of the Tao is spontaneity.
すると倫理は、自然秩序の段々と昇っていくレベルについて老子が次のように述べているように、自然=自発的に従属する。
人法地 人は地に法 (のっと)り
地法天 地は天に法 (のっと)り
天法道 天は道に法 (のっと)り
道法自然 道は自然に法 (のっと)る
There is something
that contains everything.
Before heaven and earth
it is.
Oh, it is still, unbodied,
all on its own, unchanging,
all-pervading,
ever-moving.
So it can act as the mother
of all things.
Not knowing its real name,
we only call it the Way.
If it must be named,
let its name be Great.
Greatness means going on,
going on means going far,
and going far means turning back.
So they say: “The Way is great,
heaven is great,
earth is great,
and humankind is great;
four greatness in the world,
and humanity is one of them.”
People follow earth,
earth follows heaven,
heaven follows the Way,
the Way follows what is.
タオは天と地のできる前からある。
その状態は
あらゆるものの混ざりあった混沌 (カオス)だ。
そこは
本当の孤独と静寂に
満ちていて、すべてが
混ざりあい変化しつづける。
あらゆるところに行き渡り、
すべてのものを産むのだから、
大自然の母と言ってよいかもしれぬ。
こんな混沌は名づけようがないから、
私は仮りに道 (タオ) と呼ぶんだが、もし、
この働きの特色はなにか、と訊かれれば、
「大いなるもの」と応えよう。
それは大きなものだから
遠くまで行く。
遠くまで行くから、
帰ってくる。
このタオの偉大さを、
受けついだ天は偉大であり、
それを受けた大地は偉大なのだ。
その大地にいる人間だって、
タオにつながる時は偉大なんだよ。
だってその人は
大地に従って生きるからだ。
大地は天に従っているし、
天は道 (タオ) に従い、
道 (タオ)はそれ自体、自らの動きであり、それこそ
最も大いなる自然と言えるんだ。
