20世紀最大の哲学者ともいわれるハイデガーは、10年早く「歎異抄」を知ったら、哲学の歴史は変わっていただろうと、晩年の日記に記しています。
Martin Heidegger, often called the greatest philosopher of the 20th century, wrote in his later diary that if he had encountered the Tannishō ten years earlier, the course of philosophical history might have changed.

“Today, through its English translation, I read the Tannishō of the Eastern sage Shinran for the first time. Had I known ten years ago that such a remarkable saint existed in the East, I would not have studied Greek or Latin. I would have learned Japanese, listened to the words of the sage, and devoted my life to spreading his teachings across the world. But it is too late. What are the people of Japan doing? Japan, having lost the war, now claims it will contribute to global culture as a cultural nation. But if you ask me, grand buildings and fine art are unnecessary. I want people to become individuals who carry the fragrance of the sage’s teachings. Whether in business, tourism, or politics, I want Japanese people to be the kind of individuals who, when encountered, give off a sense of profound wisdom. Then people around the world will come to know this teaching. The French will embrace it through French, the Danes through Danish, and each will make the sage’s teachings their own. Only then will we begin to see a path toward resolving the issue of world peace. The foundation of 21st-century civilization will be laid.”
親鸞聖人の正しい教えを鮮明にするために書き遺された歎異抄でしたが、皮肉にも後世、その教えを誤解・曲解させる要因ともなりました。
The Tannishō was written to clarify the true teachings of Shinran Shōnin, yet ironically, it later became a source of misunderstanding and distortion.
