現在公開中の映画「MERCY/AI裁判」は、AIと対峙した被告である主人公が、AIにない「直観」を駆使して、間一髪、死刑執行を逃れるというスリラーですが、現代社会ではますます、AIにすべてを任せず、自らの直観を頼りにしなければ、それこそ死活問題につながる場面が増えてくると思われます。
The recently released film MERCY: The AI Trial is a thriller in which the protagonist—standing as a defendant before an AI judge—manages to escape execution at the very last moment by relying on a form of “intuition” that AI does not possess. In today’s world, too, it seems increasingly likely that situations will arise where entrusting everything to AI could be a matter of life and death, and where we must instead depend on our own intuitive insight.

Bergson’s writings avoid technical philosophical jargon as much as possible and explain his ideas through concrete examples. For that reason, one can often gain more by reading his original French than by relying solely on translations. What follows is an English passage that captures the flow of his original thought more directly than Japanese translations typically do.

If I want to communicate to someone who does not know Greek language the simple impression of a poem by Homer. I would give him a poem by Homer, Then I would explain the translation of the poem and describe my commentary and from explanation to explanation I will come closer to closer to what I want to explain; but it would never end. When you raise your arm you achieve the movement internally; the simple perception; but internally, for me who looks at it, your arm moves by a point, then by another point, and between those two points there will still be other points, so that if I begin to count the operation would continue without end. Seen from the inside, an absolute is thus a simple thing; but looked at from outside, in other words relative to something else, it becomes, due to their relation with the signs they express, the piece of gold which one can never find to repay.
絶対は直観のうちだけに与えられる。それ以外はすべて分析の領分に属する。私がここで直観というのは、対象の内部に身を置き、その対象がもつ唯一なもの、すなわち表現できないものと一致する共感である。
Thus it follows that an absolute will only occur in an intuition, whereas everything else promotes analysis. Here we call intuition the sympathy by which one transports oneself into the inside of an object in order to coincide with what is unique and consequently the inexplicable.
あらゆる分析は翻訳であり、記号への展開であり、新しい対象と既知の対象との接触を継起的な視点から記述して得られる表象である。分析は対象をとらえようとして、永遠に満たされない欲望をいだき、対象の周りをまわる運命を負わされ、視点の数をどこまでもふやし、つねに不完全な表象を完全にしようとし、記号を絶えず取りかえ、不満足な翻訳を満足にしようとする。こうして分析は無限に続く。しかし直観は、もしそれが可能ならば単純な行為である。
All analysis is thus a translation, a development in symbols, a representation taken from symbols, a representation taken from successive points of view from which one notice just as many contacts between the new object one studies, and others that one believes to know already. In its endlessly unfulfilled craving desire of embracing the object around which it is condemned to turn, the analysis endlessly multiples the points of view by completing the always unfulfilled representation, varies the symbols without relief in order to improve the imperfect translation. Thus it continues forever. But the intuition, whenever possible, is a simple act.
