自然界の事物のほとんどは、自由ではありません。たとえば石には、自分で物事を決めることはできません。石が動いているとき、それはただ「自然法則」に従って運動しているに過ぎません。風が吹けば石は動くかも知れません。そのとき石は、そのように動くことしかできなかったのであり、別様に動く可能性は閉ざされています。
Most things in the natural world are not free. A stone, for example, cannot decide anything for itself. When a stone is in motion, it is merely moving in accordance with the “laws of nature.” If the wind blows, the stone may move. In that moment, the stone can only move in that particular way; all other possibilities are closed to it.
それに対して、自由な人間は、常に別の可能性へと開かれています。今日の晩に何を食べるのかを決めるとき、「私」には和食を選ぶこともできれば、洋食を選ぶこともできるわけです。つまり自由とは、与えられた選択肢のなかから一つを選ぶことであり、その選択の原因が自分自身にある、ということを意味するのです。しかし、よく考えれば、これは不思議な話です。なぜなら、「私」は自分で選んでこの世界に生まれてきたわけではないからです。私たちは、生れてくる前に、生れてくるかどうかを選択したわけではありません。気が付いたら、この世界にすでに生まれてきていたのです。そうであるとしたら、そもそも「私」は、自分が自由であることを自分で選んだわけではないのです。では、それでも「私」が自由であるのは、なぜなのでしょうか。
In contrast, a free human being is always open to other possibilities. When deciding what to eat for dinner tonight, “I” can choose Japanese food or Western food. Freedom, in this sense, means choosing one option from among those available, and that the cause of that choice lies within oneself. Yet, if we think carefully, this is quite mysterious. After all, “I” did not choose to be born into this world. Before we were born, we did not choose whether or not to come into existence. When we became aware, we already found ourselves born into this world. If that is the case, then “I” did not choose to be free in the first place. Why, then, am I nevertheless free?
ヤスパースはそれを、何かが「私」を自由にさせているからだ、と考えます。つまり「私」は何ものかによって自由を「授けられている」のです。では、「私」に自由を授けているのは何ものでしょうか。
Jaspers thinks this is because something “makes me free.” In other words, “I” am given freedom by something beyond myself. Then what is it that grants freedom to “me”?
「私」が自由なのは、神によって自由を授けられているからである。しかし、神に授けられているだけならば、結局のところ「私」自身は自由ではないのではないか。そう思われたとしても不思議ではありません。
“I” am free because God grants me freedom. But if freedom is merely something given by God, then perhaps “I” am not truly free after all. It is not strange if someone thinks this way.
たとえばプロスポーツ選手が現役を引退すべきかどうか否かを迷っているとしましょう。怪我などのはっきりとしたきっかけがなければ、その決断はとても困難なものになります。自分の選手としてのキャリアがそこで終わってしまうにもかかわらず、それを自分で決めないといけないからです。もしここで引退してしまったら、後悔するのではないか、そうした不安を払拭することができず、いつまでも迷い続けてしまうことは、想像に難くありません。
Imagine a professional athlete who is unsure whether it is time to retire. Without a clear trigger such as an injury, the decision becomes extremely difficult. Even though their career would end with that decision, they must decide it themselves. If they retire now, will they regret it? Unable to dispel such anxieties, it is easy to imagine them remaining stuck in indecision for a long time.
しかし、徹底的に迷い続けると、ふと引退するべきときがはっきりとわかる瞬間が訪れるものなのかも知れません。元プロ野球選手の桑田真澄(くわた・ますみ)氏は、こんな言葉を残しています。
However, after struggling deeply with the decision, there may come a moment when the right time to retire suddenly becomes clear. Former professional baseball player Masumi Kuwata once said:
「やめる時はね、そういう風が吹くんですよ。神様が背中を押す風を吹かせてくれるはずなんです。」
“When it’s time to quit, a certain wind blows. God sends a wind that gently pushes your back.”
このような実感のもとで引退を決意した選手は、まるで自分を超えた存在が自分に引退するという決断を促したように感じるのではないでしょうか。ただしこのことは、決して神がその選手を無理やり引退させたことにはなりません。あくまで引退を決意したのは選手自身です。そのことは本人が一番よく分かっているでしょう。だからこそ、自分を超えた何ものかによって選択を促されることと、その選択が自分の自由によるものである、ということは、完全に両立するのです。ヤスパースはこのような観点から、「私」の自由な選択のうちに、神の存在に対する確信が生じうる、と説明するのです。
An athlete who decides to retire based on such an experience may feel as though a being beyond themselves urged them toward that decision. Yet this does not mean that God forced the athlete to retire. The decision was ultimately made by the athlete themselves. No one understands this better than the athlete. Precisely for this reason, being prompted by something beyond oneself and making a choice freely are entirely compatible. From this perspective, Jaspers explains that within our free choices, a certainty of God’s existence can arise.
「私」は自分で望んでこの世界に生まれてきたのではありません。しかし、そうであるにもかかわらず、「私」の人生は最初からすべて決まっているわけでもありません。なぜなせ、「私」は自由を授けられているからです。そして、そうであるとしたら、この世界にはどこかに「私」へと自由を授けた存在があるはずです。それは神以外にはありえない。そのようにヤスパースは考えるのです。
“I” did not choose to be born into this world. Yet despite that, my life is not predetermined from the beginning. Why? Because “I” have been granted freedom. And if that is so, then there must be somewhere in this world a being that granted freedom to “me.” For Jaspers, that being can only be God.
