Hiromi Shimada’s Why Does Shinto Have No Doctrine? is a book that attempts to answer the simple yet essential question, “What is Shinto?”, from the perspectives of history and religious studies.
〇なぜ神道には、仏教やキリスト教のような明確な「教義」「経典」「開祖」が存在しないのか?
島田氏は、これは神道の欠陥ではなく、神道が成立してきた歴史的事情そのものだと論じます。
1.神道は「後から名づけられた宗教」。
古代日本には、自然や祖先、土地の神々を祀る多様な祭祀習俗がありました。それらが最初から「神道」という一つの宗教だったわけではありません。仏教伝来以降、仏教と区別する必要から「神の道=神道」という呼び名が生まれた、というのが著者の見方です。
つまり神道は、体系化された宗教として始まったのではありません。
Why does Shinto lack clear “doctrine,” “scripture,” or a “founder,” unlike Buddhism or Christianity?
Shimada argues that this is not a defect of Shinto but a direct result of the historical circumstances in which Shinto developed.

In ancient Japan, diverse ritual customs existed for honoring nature, ancestors, and local deities. These practices were not originally a single unified religion called “Shinto.” According to Shimada, the term Shinto—“the way of the kami”—arose only after the introduction of Buddhism, when it became necessary to distinguish native practices from Buddhist ones. In other words, Shinto did not begin as a systematized religion.
2.教えよりも「儀礼」と「実践」が中心。
神道の核心は、祭り、清め、祈り、共同体の維持、にあります。「何を信じるか」よりも「どう振舞うか」「どう場を整えるか」が重視されます。そのため、抽象的な教義が発達しませんでした。
- Shinto centers on “ritual” and “practice” rather than doctrine.
The core of Shinto lies in festivals, purification, prayer, and the maintenance of community. What matters is not “what one believes” but “how one behaves” and “how one prepares the space.” For this reason, abstract doctrines never developed.
3.国家と結びつくことで「教え」を持たなかった神道。
近代以降、神道は「国家神道」として政治と深く結びつきました。国家を支える装置として用いられたため、個人の救済、内面的な信仰告白、といった要素は、意図的に前面に出されなかった。これも「教えがない」ように見える大きな理由です。
- Shinto’s connection with the state discouraged doctrinal development.
From the modern period onward, Shinto became deeply tied to politics as “State Shinto.” Because it functioned as an apparatus supporting the nation, elements such as personal salvation or inner confession of faith were intentionally kept in the background. This is another major reason Shinto appears to have “no teachings.”
4.「日本人は無宗教」という意識の背景。
著者は、日本人が初詣に行き、結婚式は神前、葬式は仏式、という振舞いを自然に行う点に注目します。これは、神道が生活文化として溶け込んできた結果であり、「信仰を言語化しない宗教」だからこそ可能だったと説明します。
- The background of the idea that “Japanese people are non‑religious.”
Shimada notes that Japanese people naturally engage in behaviors such as visiting shrines for New Year’s, holding weddings before the kami, and having funerals in Buddhist style.
This is the result of Shinto having blended into everyday life as culture. Precisely because it is a “religion that does not verbalize belief,” such coexistence became possible.
『神道はなぜ教えがないのか』は、神道を「曖昧」「不完全な宗教」と見る視点を否定。むしろ、「非教義的」「非排他的」「生活密着型」という特徴を持つ、独特な宗教形態として再評価しています。
Why Does Shinto Have No Doctrine? rejects the view that Shinto is “vague” or “an incomplete religion.” Instead, it reevaluates Shinto as a unique religious form characterized by being non‑doctrinal, non‑exclusive, and deeply embedded in daily life.
