I recently came across a passage in An Introduction to Zen Buddhism(禅学入門)—D.T. Suzuki’s own Japanese translation of the lectures on Zen that he originally wrote abroad in English—that resonates strikingly with Eckhart Tolle’s Stillness Speaks, which I have been introducing in earlier posts. Both share the understanding that thought is useful, but it is not the truth itself. When thinking comes to a stop, the world does not vanish; rather, it appears for the first time in its true form.
The world of mufunbetsu—non‑discrimination—described in An Introduction to Zen Buddhism overlaps almost completely with the Being that Tolle speaks of in Stillness Speaks. If this interests you, I highly recommend reading An Introduction to Zen Buddhism. Below, I introduce an excerpt from the text.
私が東洋は神秘的だと言うのは、それは空想的で、非合理的で、全然知的理解の範囲を逸脱したものを言うのではない。東洋の精神には何か静寂、安詳(あんじょう)、沈黙、幽玄、そして永遠のなかにまさに見られると思われるようなものがあると言うのである。しかしこの安詳と沈黙とは断然怠惰と不活動を指すのではない。沈黙とは、かのすべての生物の刈り取られてしまった砂漠のそれでもなければ、また永久の眠りと硬化に陥った屍体のそれを言うのでもない。すべての対立と条件とが埋没し去られた「永遠の深淵」である。それは神—過去、現在、未来の仕事について深い黙想に耽(ふけ)り、静かに絶対的一、絶対的全の王座に着座するところの—神の沈黙である。
When I say that the East is mystical, I do not mean that the East is fantastic, irrational, and altogether impossible to bring within the sphere of intellectual comprehension. What I mean is simply that in the working of the Eastern mind there is something calm, quiet, silent, undisturbable, which appears as if always looking into eternity. This quietude and silence, however, does not point to mere idleness or inactivity. The silence is not that of desert shorn of all vegetation, nor it is that of a corpse forever gone to sleep and decay. It is the silence of an “eternal abyss” in which all contrasts and conditions are buried; it is the silence of God who, deeply absorbed in contemplation of his works past, present, and future, sits calmly on his throne of absolute oneness and allness.
