トルストイは、教会的・教条的キリスト教を否定し、イエスの言葉を倫理的・内面的真理として新しく読み直す姿勢を示しました。その著書『要約福音書』の冒頭に次の記述があります。
「真の生命は時間の外にあり、それは現在の中にのみある」
これは、これまで紹介したエックハルト・トールの超ベストセラー“The Power of Now”の教えと通底するものがあり、現代に生きる私たちの心に非常に響くものがあると思います。
それまでの哲学をある意味で「白紙に戻し」、現代哲学を切り拓いた哲学者ウィトゲンシュタインも、この本に深く共鳴し、キリスト教に「転向」しました。キリスト教に興味はあるが、何か古臭さを感じて現代に生きる自分には役に立たないのではないか、と感じられている方は、ぜひ挑戦する価値のある名著だと思います。
Tolstoy rejected ecclesiastical and dogmatic Christianity and instead adopted a stance of rereading the words of Jesus anew as ethical and inner truths. At the beginning of his book The Gospel in Brief, he writes:
“True life is outside time, and it exists only in the present.”
This resonates strongly with the teaching of Eckhart Tolle’s modern mega-bestseller The Power of Now, which I have previously introduced, and I believe it speaks profoundly to our hearts as people living in the contemporary world. Ludwig Wittgenstein, the philosopher who in a sense “wiped the slate clean” of previous philosophy and paved the way for modern philosophy, also felt a deep resonance with this book and subsequently “converted” to Christianity. For those who are interested in Christianity but feel that it somehow seems outdated or irrelevant to their lives today, this is a masterpiece well worth taking up the challenge of reading.
