その本文が「世界は、成立している事柄の総体であるThe world is everything that is the case 」から「語りえないことについては、沈黙しなければならない Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent」までの『論理哲学論考』ですが、その最終部分、通し番号6.41が「世界の意味は、世界の外になければならない」で始まる文で、「世界のなかには価値は存在しない」とも述べています。これは一見すると、まったく理解不能かもしれませんが、実は、ウィトゲンシュタインが論考を積み重ねて辿りついた、最も重要な結論なのです。そもそも、ウィトゲンシュタインにとって「世界」とは何か、そして「価値(倫理・宗教)」とは何か、読者はそれらを理解すれば、「語りえないことについては、沈黙しなければならない」という、哲学史上最も有名な言葉の意味が腑に落ちるはずです。
The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus runs from its opening line, “The world is everything that is the case,” to its closing line, “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.” In its final section, proposition 6.41 begins with the claim, “The sense of the world must lie outside the world,” and also states that “there is no value in the world.” At first glance, this may seem completely incomprehensible. In fact, however, it is the most important conclusion Wittgenstein arrives at after building up his arguments throughout the work. To begin with, what does Wittgenstein mean by “the world”? And what is meant by “value” (ethics and religion)? If readers understand these, the meaning of the famous philosophical statement, “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent,” will become clear.
ウィトゲンシュタインの言う「世界」とは、「起きていること(事実)」の集合で、そこには「善い・悪い」は含まれていません。事実とは、
・「AがBの上にある」
・「雨が降っている」
これらはすべて、世界が「どうなっているか(is)」ということです。
これに対して、倫理や宗教は、
・善い/悪い
・生きる意味
・神・価値
で、「どうあるべきか(ought)」なのです。
つまり、「事実=世界の状態」は「語れる」が、「価値=善・意味・価値」は「語れない」のです。
For Wittgenstein, the “world” is the totality of what happens (facts), and it contains no notions of “good” or “bad.” Facts are statements such as:
・“A is on B”
・“It is raining”
All of these concern how the world is.
In contrast, ethics and religion concern:
・good and evil
・the meaning of life
・God and value
These deal with how things ought to be.
In other words, “facts = the state of the world” can be spoken about, whereas “value = goodness, meaning, worth” cannot be spoken about.
さらにウィトゲンシュタインは、こうも言います。「倫理は言葉にできない(transcendental)」。この「transcendental超越的」とは、すなわち「世界の外にある」ということで、では、倫理は無意味なのか? というと、「意味がない」のではなく、「言葉で言えない」ということなのです。そして、「語りえないことについては、沈黙しなければならない」とは、「無意味だから黙れ」ではなく「言語の外だから無理に言うな」という意味なのです。
Furthermore, Wittgenstein also says: “Ethics cannot be put into words (it is transcendental).” The term “transcendental” here means “outside the world.” Does that mean ethics are meaningless? Not at all. It does not mean they lack meaning; rather, it means they cannot be expressed in language.Thus, “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent” does not mean “be silent because it is meaningless,” but rather “do not attempt to force into language what lies outside it.”
