Don’t think—look.” Can one arrive at a standpoint from which to see the world correctly through thinking? “Wittgenstein and Zen”

Ludwig Wittgenstein opened up modern philosophy, yet his thought can be said to be unprecedented. Hiroshi Kurosaki’s Wittgenstein and Zen is a book that attempts to clarify this uniqueness by comparing it with Zen thought. The following is an excerpt.

6.54 Anyone who understands me eventually recognizes my propositions as nonsensical, when he has used them—as steps—to climb beyond them. (He must, so to speak, throw away the ladder after he has climbed up it.) (from the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus)

So what kind of clarification do the propositions of the Tractatus provide? Concerning this point, Wittgenstein continues:

Anyone who understands me must overcome my propositions. Then he sees the world rightly.

In other words, by being recognized as nonsensical and overcome by the reader who understands it, the Tractatus enables that reader to see the world correctly. It opens the reader’s eyes precisely by negating itself. This is the kind of clarification the Tractatus performs. Therefore, the Tractatus is, as it were, a stepping stone for seeing the world rightly—or a ladder that must be thrown away. Wittgenstein expresses this in the same 6.54 as follows:

(He must, so to speak, throw away the ladder after he has climbed up it.)

Here we should note the statement that “the ladder must be thrown away.” That is, once we understand the Tractatus, we must discard it. Only then can we see the world correctly. Needless to say, to be able to see the world rightly is nothing other than the liberation of the intellect. Thus, for Wittgenstein, the strategy was to have readers read the Tractatus, understand it, and then cast it aside—in order to free their minds. Only in this way, he suggests, can we truly see the world as it is. In the end, he is saying, “Don’t think—look!” Ultimately, we must abandon metaphysics, logic—and indeed any intellectual language. Here I cannot help but recall the following words from Zen:

If you wish to see, then see immediately. But if you try to think about it, it will be completely lost.(D. T. Suzuki, Zen)

Both Wittgenstein and Zen maintain that one cannot reach a standpoint from which to see the world correctly (or, in the case of Zen, rather the “self”) through thinking. Indeed, they suggest that thinking actually obstructs the attainment of such a standpoint. Of course, thinking is, in a sense, absolutely necessary. But at a certain stage it must be overcome and discarded. “The ladder, once climbed, must be thrown away.”
