Akihiro Miwa’s secret to remaining “authentic” → “refinement and kindness” From his book “A Lavish Offering of Happiness”

The ikebana artist Shogo Kariyazaki recently reflected on the late Mr. Miwa, saying that he was “the real thing.” Many of you may have found that an apt description. From his bestselling work, here is the “secret to remaining authentic.”

In all aspects of your life—your way of thinking, your speech and behavior, your fashion—whenever you make a choice, it is important to use “refinement” and “kindness” as your standards. For example, when you say of someone, “That person is like this or that,” you need to ask yourself: am I offering valid criticism, or am I attacking them out of spite? It is necessary to discern which it is. Examine your own state of mind carefully, and if you discover malice at the bottom of it, recognize it as vulgar and correct yourself.

When you try to look at things with a refined spirit, you become able to adopt a different perspective. You begin to realize that what you see is only the tip of the iceberg; beneath the surface there must be various circumstances, and that each person has their own life. Thinking this way also saves yourself, because it prevents you from becoming a vulgar person.

Complaints are often made not for the sake of others, but because one feels displeased or inconvenienced. However, that is vulgar. On the other hand, words spoken from a sense of responsibility—standing in the line of fire to protect others—do not come across as bitter or sarcastic. If you speak out of a desire not to let others be drawn into tragedy, you will not become like a deceitful politician. Even if it brings you no personal gain, when something violates integrity, you should fight against it with a selfless spirit.

In Buddhism, “refinement” (上品, jōbon) is written with those characters and used to classify people into higher, middle, and lower qualities. A “refined soul” is pure, as if it had gathered all that is good; a “vulgar” soul is one that remains like an un-evolved beast.

When I was younger, there were times when I was not refined. After all, I was born in Kyushu and have a strong temperament—if someone picked a fight with me, I didn’t just retaliate tenfold, but twenty- or thirtyfold.

Growing older is neither entirely wonderful nor entirely not; age is just a number. There are people who, even in their fifties or sixties, have not evolved and simply age as beasts. Meanwhile, there are young people who already possess a “refined soul”—everything they do is gentle, they yield to others saying “please, go ahead,” and they always seem to wear a quiet smile.

Whether you are kind or not is also crucial. You can say it out loud or keep it in your heart. Whether on a train, walking down the street, at home, or with others—if you continually apply the question “Is this refined and kind?” to everything you do, you will be able to discipline yourself.
