Susumu Nishibe was a conservative intellectual who sought to remind people that human beings are historical and cultural beings, in contrast to a society obsessed with speed, efficiency, and progress. For modern Japanese people—among whom the number of those trying to understand the world through short videos rather than by reading long texts has exploded—his warning may carry an important message.
西部邁による造語でvideocy(ヴィデオシー)しいう言葉があり、literacy(リテラシー)を圧倒しつつあるものとして論じています。
Nishibe coined the term “videocy”, which he discussed as something increasingly overwhelming “literacy.” Literacy originally means the ability to read and write, but by extension it also implies the capacity for logical thinking, abstract reasoning, systematic understanding, and following complex written arguments. In contrast, Nishibe used videocy critically to refer to a mode of consciousness that grasps the world primarily through images, or a way of understanding that relies on visual imagery rather than written language.
In his critique of television society and mass society, Nishibe regarded the following tendencies as problematic:
・Not reading books
・Not following logical reasoning
・Making judgments based on images
・Allowing emotional reactions to take precedence
Thus, through the phrase “from the age of literacy to the age of videocy,” he described a civilizational shift from thinking through words to reacting through images.
Had Nishibe lived today, he might well have regarded not only television but also TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and other short-form social media videos as the ultimate manifestation of videocy. In other words, he would have seen a growing tendency to watch rather than read, feel rather than think, and react rather than debate.
However, Nishibe was not simply arguing that visual media are inherently bad. Rather, his concern was that if the power of images became too dominant, the qualities cultivated by a text-based culture—such as careful reflection, intellectual cultivation, and logical reasoning—might decline. His argument was essentially a civilizational diagnosis: the text-centered mode of thought that supported modern society was increasingly being swept aside by an image-centered mode of thinking.
Images can make a powerful impression in an instant, but they also tend to omit complex reasoning and long historical explanations. For example, reading a 100-page history book and watching a 30-second video clip produce fundamentally different kinds of understanding. Nishibe was concerned that the latter would come to dominate.
