This installment introduces Human Beings, This Dramatic Creature (Ningen, Kono Gekiteki Naru Mono), one of Fukuda Tsuneari’s most celebrated works. Renowned for his translations of Shakespeare, Fukuda offers a unique perspective on human nature that transcends conventional wisdom and common assumptions.
As I have already said, what we truly desire is not our own freedom. It is our own destiny.
This may invite misunderstanding, but perhaps I can make myself clearer by putting it this way: Only when we are conscious of being within our own destiny can we genuinely experience a sense of freedom and vitality. The feeling that one is where one ought to be—that is what a sense of destiny is. It does not necessarily imply some grand, tragic fate. Destiny is, in fact, something quite simple.
Is there not something mistaken in the very notion of freedom? Is freedom, after all, not the philosophy of slaves? That is what I believe.
No one can ever attain happiness through freedom alone. Once the idea of freedom takes hold of a person's heart, he begins pursuing it without limit. There are two directions in which this pursuit can proceed: inward and outward. If one seeks freedom within, one becomes isolated. If one seeks it externally, one cannot help but aspire to join the privileged class. That is why I call it the philosophy of slaves. A slave is always faced with one of two paths: either solitude or the ambition to seize privilege.
People do not arrive at the idea of freedom while enjoying a stable sense of victory or fulfillment. The belief that individuality is a superior quality distinguishing one from others is, so to speak, a modern illusion. Even without tracing the idea back to the Stoics or Epicureans, it has always been the case that people first conceive of freedom and individuality through the awareness that they lack something and have been excluded from the whole. Yet this sense of deficiency is all too easily transformed into something else, coming to appear in the eyes of the weak as though it were the highest virtue.
Freedom in its true sense is the capacity to occupy one's proper place within the whole. There is no freedom in an individuality that denies the whole. To deny an existing whole and reorganize it according to one’s own convenience is not something an individual part can accomplish. Even if one gathers enough numbers, it remains impossible.
And yet today, people are under the illusion that such a thing is easy. That is why the word “organization” has become so fashionable. But it cannot be done. By mistaking the impossible for the possible, are we not failing to notice that something is being lost—something of the greatest importance?
