What Is the Uniquely Japanese Way of Thinking That Stands Apart from Modern Western Civilization, Which May Destroy Humanity? Takeshi Umehara, "What Is Japanese Tradition?"

The foundation of the Japanese spiritual mindset was shaped by the Kamakura Buddhist schools, such as Jōdo Shinshū, Zen, and Nichiren Buddhism. A common philosophical thread running through these traditions is the doctrine known as "Tendai Original Enlightenment Thought" (Tendai Hongaku-ron). One of its most important teachings is "Sōmoku Kokudo Shikkai Jōbutsu" (草木国土悉皆成仏).

This phrase means that not only sentient beings but even grasses, trees, the earth, mountains, and rivers—all things lacking consciousness—can become Buddhas. Whereas traditional Buddhism generally held that one becomes a Buddha through religious practice and enlightenment, Tendai Original Enlightenment Thought teaches that all beings are already Buddhas by their very nature. This is one of its central teachings and a uniquely Japanese development within Buddhist thought.

The following is an excerpt from What Is Japanese Tradition? by Takeshi Umehara:

I believe that modern civilization has come up against a major wall. The cause of this crisis facing humanity lies in modern philosophy. Modern civilization has been built according to the spirit of modern philosophy, particularly the philosophies of thinkers such as Descartes and Bacon.

Put simply, Descartes doubted everything. In the end, however, he arrived at one thing that could not be doubted: the existence of the self that is doing the doubting. This is the famous principle, "Cogito, ergo sum"—"I think, therefore I am." The self that thinks is regarded as the most certain reality. This philosophy places absolute value on the thinking human being, while the natural world becomes the object existing in contrast to that thinking subject.

To understand the logos (the rational order) of this objective natural world is what we call science. By understanding that logos, human beings can dominate nature; this is what technology does. The idea is that the thinking self is the most certain and absolute existence, while nature stands opposite it. Since nature is governed by scientific laws, if those laws are understood, then humanity can control the objective world and use nature as though it were a slave. In simple terms, this is the thinking of Descartes and Bacon. Modern civilization was built upon this way of thinking.

As a result, humanity came to dominate nature. This philosophy of mastering nature generated great wealth and powerful military strength. Through such wealth and power, Western peoples conquered the world and unified it. They also created an astonishingly rich and convenient civilization. People in developed countries today enjoy a level of prosperity and convenience unimaginable to earlier generations. While the Japanese may still have various problems regarding housing, in terms of food and clothing they live better than the aristocrats of the Middle Ages.

When I was young, I wrote my graduation thesis at Kyoto University on the concept of "the time of progress." Although belief in progress was a common conviction in modern thought, I argued that the idea of endless progress was fundamentally flawed. Looking back now, I think I had a certain foresight. Environmental destruction has gradually become more serious, and events have unfolded much as I predicted.

At that time, anyone who opposed progress was considered a very bad person. There were two major views of progress: the capitalist belief that capitalism would develop indefinitely, and the socialist belief that genuine progress would come only through socialism. I opposed both. I argued that the very ideology of progress itself was bankrupt and wrote in my thesis that modern civilization had run into profound contradictions. Very few people understood what I meant.

My prediction proved correct, and for the past twenty years or so, environmental destruction has become a major global concern. This is a grave problem. Modern people believed that if they conquered nature, nature would serve humanity like a slave. But nature is not a slave. Nature is humanity's mother. We are born from our mother, yet we exploit her recklessly. We are trying to kill her. But if we kill our mother, we ourselves will perish as well.

We have now entered such an age. Anthropocentrism can no longer continue. Instead, we must adopt a way of thinking more like Japan's Tendai Original Enlightenment Thought, which places value on all living beings. Not only animals, but even plants, minerals, and the land itself live and die just as human beings do. They possess Buddha-nature and are capable of attaining Buddhahood. I believe we must come to embrace such a worldview.
