Shinran Special (Part 2): What Is the Difference Between “Knowing” and “Believing” Shinran’s Teachings?

In The Essence of Religion, a collection of exchanged letters between the religious scholar Tetsushū Shaku and the literary critic Eisuke Wakamatsu, I came across a particularly thought-provoking discussion. An excerpt follows:

(Tetsushū Shaku)

This happened quite a long time ago. A professor under whom I studied Buddhism once said the following:

“The other day, a renowned scholar sent me a copy of a book he had written on Shinran, asking me to recommend it to acquaintances and colleagues. When I read it, I found that it was indeed thoroughly researched and carefully written. However, in the afterword he wrote, ‘I like Shinran very much, but I have absolutely no intention of reciting the nembutsu.’

I cannot believe that someone who has no intention whatsoever of practicing the nembutsu can truly understand Shinran. Therefore, I do not feel inclined to recommend the book.”

As I listened to him, I realized: “For this teacher, Shinran’s thought was something to be practiced with one’s entire life. It was not something from which one could simply extract and utilize the convenient parts.”

(Eisuke Wakamatsu)

I, too, have spent much time reflecting on the question of what it means to believe.

Suppose that, before deeply sensing or understanding what belief itself is, we begin by asking what we ought to believe. Looking at the state of society today, it is clear that what awaits us there can sometimes be something quite frightening.

When people confront religion without first contemplating the meaning of belief itself, they may undergo unbearable suffering as they struggle to distinguish between what deserves to be called true religion and what can only be called a false religion.

While reading a book by a certain Buddhist monk, I came across a very interesting observation:

“Nowadays, religion has become less an object of belief and more an object of study. People seek discussions of ‘culture’ and ‘education,’ while distancing themselves from discussions of faith.” I would not say that approaching religion as a matter of cultural learning is meaningless. However, what exists there may be a stuffed specimen of religion rather than a living religion.

One may receive explanations about what prayer is, yet never come to understand its true essence. It may be similar to trying to savor food made of wax. The appearance is remarkably close to the real thing. Yet there is no vitality, no living energy, and no fragrance within it.
