Shinran’s concept of shinjin and the Christian idea of faith are similar in that both involve a fundamental trust related to salvation. However, there are important differences in their content and structure. Broadly speaking:
・Christian faith: Believing in God and accepting Christ as one's Savior.
・Shinran’s shinjin: Realizing that Amida Buddha’s salvation is already directed toward oneself, and becoming free of doubt about it.
A distinctive feature of Shinran’s shinjin is that it is less an active act of believing and more a passive experience of being “made to believe” or “awakened” to a truth. In the Kyōgyōshinshō, shinjin is described not as something human beings create, but as something bestowed by Amida Buddha.
Similarities
- Salvation Through Grace Rather Than Self-Power
Both Christianity and Shinran share the view that human beings cannot attain salvation through their own efforts alone.
In Pauline theology, a person is not justified merely through observance of the Law or good deeds, but is saved through the grace of God. Shinran likewise held that ordinary beings, burdened with blind passions and delusions, cannot attain enlightenment through self-powered practice.
Therefore, the power of Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow becomes essential. For this reason, the Protestant doctrine of justification by faith and Shinran’s concept of Other Power (tariki) are often compared in the academic study of comparative religion.
- Emphasis on the Weak Rather Than the Virtuous
In Christianity, Jesus proclaimed the Gospel particularly to sinners and the marginalized. Shinran likewise emphasized the recognition that one is an ordinary being filled with blind passions and limitations.
This perspective developed into his famous doctrine of akunin shōki ("evil persons are the very ones who are the primary objects of salvation"). In both traditions, the paradox is that salvation is not primarily for the righteous and accomplished, but for those who most need saving.
Difference 1: The Object of Belief
Christianity
The object of faith is a personal God. God loves, speaks, becomes angry, forgives, and acts as a personal being. Consequently, faith is understood as a personal relationship with God.
Shinran
Although Amida Buddha is sometimes spoken of in personal terms, what Shinran emphasizes is Amida’s Primal Vow itself.
Shinjin is not about developing affection for Amida Buddha. Rather, it is being awakened to the truth that Amida’s vow to save all beings is genuine and trustworthy.
Difference 2: The Role of the Believer
Christianity
Fundamentally, Christianity is structured as "I believe in God." While divine grace comes first, the believer’s response of faith remains important.
Shinran
Shinran goes even further. He maintains that shinjin itself is granted by Amida Buddha.
Shinjin is not the result of an individual decision or act of will. It comes into being through the working of Amida Buddha. In this sense, Shinran’s teaching can be seen as presenting an even more radically passive understanding of salvation than Christianity.
Difference 3: Assurance of Salvation
Christianity
Salvation is often understood as an ongoing relationship with God. Different Christian traditions interpret the permanence of salvation differently:
・Once saved, always saved.
・Salvation can be lost if faith is abandoned.
These positions vary among denominations.
Shinran
Shinran taught that the moment shinjin is truly established, rebirth in the Pure Land is already assured.
Therefore, reciting the nembutsu is not a condition for attaining salvation; rather, it is an expression of gratitude for salvation already received.
・entrusting(身を任せる)
・awakening(目覚め)
Conclusion
To state it boldly, Christianity may be described as a "religion of believing in God," whereas Shinran’s Jōdo Shinshū may be described as a "religion of awakening to the fact that one is already the object of salvation."
In Christianity, the central emphasis is trust in God. In Shinran’s teaching, the focus is awakening to the reality that Amida Buddha saves me.
For this reason, some scholars argue that Shinran’s shinjin is closer than the English word faith to concepts such as:
・Entrusting
・Awakening
Some researchers in comparative religion have even referred to Shinran as the "Japanese Luther." In reality, however, Shinran’s concept of shinjin is arguably even more radically dependent on Other Power than Luther’s doctrine of faith, placing human agency one step further in the background.
At first glance, Shinran’s teaching may appear to be a simple message that "one is saved simply by believing." Yet a careful reading of the Kyōgyōshinshō reveals that shinjin is not merely a psychological state or a personal conviction. Rather, it is described as the realization that one is a being powerless to save oneself and, just as one is, already embraced by the boundless compassion of Amida Buddha.
