Shinran Special(Part5): When We Recite “Namu Amida Butsu,” Is the Voice We Hear Not Our Own, but the Call of Amida Buddha?

According to Shinran, the voice that utters “Namu Amida Butsu” is not so much our own voice as it is the voice of Amida Buddha calling out to us. This understanding is deeply connected to the concept of Other Power (tariki), which lies at the heart of Jōdo Shinshū (Shin Buddhism). At first glance, it seems obvious that we ourselves recite Namu Amida Butsu with our own mouths and by our own will. However, Shinran looked at this matter in a much more fundamental way.

According to Shinran, human beings are filled with blind passions and delusions, and therefore cannot attain perfect faith through their own efforts. Amida Buddha, however, vowed to save all people and has already fulfilled that salvific work. For this reason, the nembutsu is understood not as “my voice calling out to the Buddha”, but as “the voice of Amida Buddha already calling out to save me.” In other words, the nembutsu is not a message from human beings to the Buddha, but a message from the Buddha to human beings.

Shinran taught that the Name (myōgō) itself, Namu Amida Butsu, is the very working of Amida Buddha. In Jōdo Shinshū, it is often explained that Amida’s Primal Vow, which says, “Entrust yourself to me; I will surely save you,” reaches us in the form of the Name, Namu Amida Butsu. Therefore, when we recite the nembutsu, it is not that:

I am calling upon the Buddha.

I am generating faith through my own effort.

Rather, it is that:

Amida Buddha is calling to me.

Amida Buddha’s vow is manifesting itself through my voice.

Because of this, Jōdo Shinshū places greater emphasis on hearing the nembutsu than merely reciting it. We listen to the Namu Amida Butsu that comes from our own lips. Within that voice, we hear Amida Buddha’s call: “I will never abandon you” and “You are already embraced by salvation.” Shinran understood this as the event through which shinjin (entrusting faith) is bestowed.

To use an analogy, when a child calls out, “Mother!”, that voice already presupposes a relationship in which the child has long been nurtured and called upon by the parent. Shinran viewed the nembutsu in a similar way. It is not that I first discover Amida Buddha and then call upon him. Rather, Amida Buddha has already been reaching out to me all along, and that resonance appears through my lips as Namu Amida Butsu.

For Shinran, therefore, the nembutsu is not the result of faith. Rather, the very fact that the nembutsu arises is evidence that Amida Buddha’s saving activity is already at work. This is the profound and distinctive religious experience behind Shinran’s statement that “Namu Amida Butsu is not so much my voice as it is Amida Buddha speaking to me.”

At first glance, Shinran’s thought may seem paradoxical, yet it possesses extraordinary depth. Ordinarily, we think, “I am moving toward the Buddha.” Shinran, however, begins from the perspective that the Buddha is already working toward me. Thus, the nembutsu is not an admirable practice reserved for exceptionally devout people. Rather, it is the event in which Amida Buddha’s call, “I will not abandon you, even in your confusion and delusion,” resounds through our own voices.

Shinran himself wrote in the Tannishō, “For the practicer, the nembutsu is neither a good act nor a religious practice.” By this, he meant that the nembutsu is not something we perform to accumulate merit. It is the working of Amida Buddha itself. Consequently, in Jōdo Shinshū, one is not saved because one recites the nembutsu many times. Instead, the very appearance of the nembutsu on one's lips is understood as a sign that one is already embraced by the Primal Vow.

Viewed in this light, the tension of thinking “I must recite the nembutsu” begins to ease. Through the voice of Namu Amida Butsu, one listens to and receives the compassionate call of Amida Buddha. That is the distinctive religious path Shinran described.
