浄土真宗のお経で、最も頻繁に口にされているのが『正信偈』ですが、その中に「能発一念喜愛心 不断煩悩得涅槃(のうほついちねんきあいしん・ふだんぼんのうとくねはん)というというフレーズがあります。『歎異抄』の普及などで有名な宗教家・暁烏敏(あけがらす・はや)による解説をご紹介します。
Among the scriptures recited in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, the Shoshinge (Hymn of True Entrusting and the Nembutsu) is by far the most frequently chanted. Within it appears the phrase:
“Nōhotsu ichinen ki-aishin, fudan bonnō toku nehan”
(能発一念喜愛心 不断煩悩得涅槃)
which may be translated as:
“When one awakens a single thought of joy and loving appreciation, one attains nirvana without severing blind passions.”
The following is an explanation by the renowned religious thinker Haya Akegarasu (1877–1954), who is also known for helping popularize the Tannishō.
「能(よ)く一念喜愛の心を発す」それはどこから出てくるか。如来如実の言が聞こえ信ぜられる、即ち仏の誠のお声が耳にはいるとどんな心が湧くか。ほのかな喜びが生まれる。慈愛の心が生まれる。一念の喜愛の心が発(おこ)るのである。いつくしみが出てくるのである。じゃから、如来の真実のお言葉を信ずるということは、喜びの本(もと)である。愛の本であります。
“Awakening a Single Thought of Joy and Loving Appreciation”
Where does this “single thought of joy and loving appreciation” arise from?
It arises when one hears and comes to trust the truthful words of the Tathagata. When the sincere voice of the Buddha enters one's ears, what kind of feeling emerges? A gentle joy is born. A heart of compassion is born. A single thought of joyful appreciation arises. A feeling of tenderness and affection naturally emerges. Thus, trusting the true words of the Tathagata is the source of joy. It is also the source of love.
如来の真実の言葉を聞くと喜びが湧いてくる。如来如実の言を聞くときは愛の心が出てくる。人なつかしい心が出る。喜びの心の扉が開いて心がにっこりすれば、顔の筋も伸びるし口も開く。その反対に悲しんでおるとものがうまくない。喜べばほのかに胸が晴れるのだ。憎めば人と隔たり、垣をする。愛は垣がとれる。だから、皆にすがる思い、皆と手をとる思い、抱きつく思いだ。如来如実の言葉を聞くと、この心が起るのです。
When one hears the true words of the Tathagata, joy wells up from within. Hearing the words of the Tathagata as they truly are gives rise to a heart of love, a feeling of warmth and closeness toward others.
When the door of joy opens and one's heart smiles, the muscles of the face relax and the mouth naturally opens in ease. By contrast, when one is overcome with sorrow, nothing seems satisfying. Joy gently clears the heart. Hatred creates distance and erects barriers between people. Love removes those barriers. It awakens a desire to lean on others, to join hands with them, and to embrace them. Hearing the true words of the Tathagata gives rise to such a heart.
「能(よ)く」は能力の能です。きっとということです。如来如実の言葉を聞けば、きっと胸から喜びが湧いてくる。愛が湧いてくる。我々は、世間の言葉を聞き、自分の言葉を聞くと、どうしてもそこに心の曲がりがある。だからそこに悲しみが発り、悪みが発る。ほのかに融けんのです。如来如実のお言葉が聞こえると胸が融けてくるのです。愛の心が発ってくるのです。自然に発るのです。その心が発ってくるから、「煩悩を断ぜずして涅槃を得」です。非常に大きなことです。
The Certainty of Joy and Love
The word “yōku” (“can” or “is able to”) here signifies certainty.
When one hears the true words of the Tathagata, joy will surely arise from the depths of the heart. Love will surely arise.
When we listen merely to worldly words or to our own thoughts, our minds inevitably become distorted. As a result, sorrow and ill will emerge. The heart does not truly soften.
But when the true words of the Tathagata are heard, the heart begins to melt. A heart of love arises naturally. Because this heart emerges, one can “attain nirvana without cutting off blind passions.” This is an immensely significant teaching.
普通に仏教では、煩悩を断じて涅槃を得るということになっておる。煩悩とは煩い悩みだ。三毒の煩悩―貪欲・瞋恚・愚痴、この煩悩をやめて涅槃を得るというのが普通です。ところがここには、煩悩を断ぜずして涅槃を得る。貪欲・瞋恚・愚痴、それを根絶やししてから涅槃の悟りを得るのじゃない。煩悩を断ぜずしてとは、そのままということだ。貪欲・瞋恚・愚痴の三毒の煩悩を苦にせんでもよいのです。「能く一念喜愛の心を発せば、煩悩を断ぜずして涅槃を得」るのです。喜びと愛の心とが発ると、喜びの心の中にも、愛の心の中にも人と自分とを融かしてしまうのです。一つに融け合うのです。善悪の隔てがなくなるのです。善人悪人のけじめがなくなるのです。
Attaining Nirvana Without Cutting Off Blind Passions
Ordinarily, Buddhism teaches that one must eliminate blind passions (bonnō) in order to attain nirvana.
Blind passions are the afflictions and delusions that trouble the mind. In particular, Buddhism speaks of the Three Poisons:
・Greed (tonyoku)
・Anger (shinni)
・Ignorance or delusion (guchi)
The conventional understanding is that one attains nirvana by eradicating these passions.
Yet here we find a different teaching: one attains nirvana without severing blind passions.
This does not mean that greed, anger, and ignorance must first be uprooted before enlightenment can be realized. Rather, “without severing blind passions” means just as one is. One need not become obsessed with overcoming these poisons.
If one awakens a single thought of joy and loving appreciation, one attains nirvana without eliminating blind passions.
When joy and love arise, they dissolve the separation between self and others. All become fused together as one. The distinctions between good and evil lose their divisive force. The boundaries separating good people from bad people disappear.
煩悩を起すまいとするのじゃない。喜びや愛の心が躍り出ておると、自然に起らんようになるのだ。喜びつつ腹を立てることは出来ぬ。悲しんでおればこそ、憎んでおればこそ、貪欲・瞋恚・愚痴の煩悩も出るのじゃが、仏の如来の言葉が信じられて、喜愛の心が湧いてくれば、貪欲も瞋恚も愚痴も起りようがない。「不断煩悩得涅槃(ふだんぼんのうとくねはん)」だ。罪を造らんようになって助けられるのじゃない。仏の如実のお言葉が耳にはいると、喜びが湧いてくる、愛が湧いてくる。そうすると三毒の煩悩の起き場がないのだ。それが煩悩を断ぜずして涅槃を得ることだ。涅槃は寂(しず)かな心、一筋の心だ。喜びの心、愛の心の上にこそ寂かなものがある。これは如来の真実のお言葉の信ぜられた人の心の上に具わる徳であると聖人はお味わいなされたのであります。
Joy and Love Transform the Heart
The point is not to struggle endlessly to suppress blind passions.
Rather, when joy and love overflow from the heart, blind passions naturally cease to arise in the same way.
One cannot be genuinely joyful and at the same time consumed by anger. Blind passions such as greed, anger, and ignorance arise when one is sorrowful, resentful, or alienated.
But when the words of the Buddha are trusted and a heart of joy and love wells up, greed, anger, and ignorance lose the ground upon which they arise.
This is the meaning of:
“Attaining nirvana without severing blind passions.”
One is not saved because one first stops creating evil. Rather, when the Buddha's true words enter one's ears, joy arises and love arises. Then there is no place for the Three Poisons to take root.
That is what it means to attain nirvana without cutting off blind passions.
Nirvana is a state of profound tranquility, a single-minded peace. Such tranquility is found precisely within a heart filled with joy and love.
According to Shinran, this is a virtue naturally present in the person who has come to trust the true words of the Tathagata.
