Amida Buddha is familiar to us through the many statues and images that portray him. However, according to Shinran, these are a kind of skillful means (hōben). In reality, what appears as Amida Buddha is the formless and colorless truth known as “Suchness” (Ichinyo), manifested in a way that human beings can understand. In Shinran’s thought, Ichinyo can be described in a single phrase as the undivided truth that lies at the foundation of all existence. The relationship between Ichinyo and Amida Buddha is one of the deepest aspects of Shinran’s philosophy. In short, Amida Buddha is Suchness itself, yet also the concrete manifestation of Suchness appearing in order to save sentient beings.
In Yuishinshō Mon’i (Notes on “Essentials of Faith Alone,” included in the Shinshū Scriptures), Shinran writes:
“The Dharma-body has neither color nor form.”
Here, the term Dharma-body (hosshin) carries almost the same meaning as Ichinyo. Suchness is:
・Truth itself
・Enlightenment itself
・The foundation of all existence
・Absolute reality beyond discrimination and conceptual distinctions
Yet human beings cannot fully grasp this Suchness. Shinran says:
“The mind cannot reach it, and words come to an end.”
In other words:
・It cannot be completely understood through thought.
・It cannot be fully expressed through language.
Shinran then makes an important point:
“From this Suchness, form is manifested, revealing the figure called the Expedient Dharma-body, taking the name Dharmākara Bodhisattva.”
That is, the formless and colorless Suchness appears in a form understandable to human beings as:
・Dharmākara Bodhisattva
・Amida Buddha
An analogy with the sun may help clarify this idea. We cannot look directly at the sun itself, yet we know it through its light and warmth. Likewise:
・Suchness (Ichinyo) = the sun itself
・Amida Buddha = its light
Shinran also states that:
“Amida Buddha is light.”
Amida Buddha is thus the way in which ultimate truth actively reaches out to us.
If truth were merely a philosophical concept, it would never reach ordinary beings like ourselves. Therefore, truth itself becomes:
・A vow
・Light
・A call
・The Name, Namu Amida Butsu
and comes toward us. This is Shinran’s understanding of Amida Buddha. For Shinran, Amida Buddha is not so much a distant personal deity residing in the western paradise as the compassionate and wise working of Suchness, seeking to awaken us to reality itself.
What is especially intriguing is that although Shinran speaks of the profound philosophy of Suchness, he ultimately arrives not at complex theory but at a remarkably simple faith:
“There is nothing beyond simply reciting the nembutsu.”
Rather than endlessly debating the nature of the deep ocean of Suchness, Shinran emphasizes receiving the call that reaches us from that ocean—the call embodied in Amida Buddha and the Sacred Name.
