Shinran Special(Part9): Is Pure Land Buddhism Ultimately a Buddhism for “Ordinary People” Who Cannot Become Buddhas Like the Buddha?

According to D. T. Suzuki, Pure Land Buddhism, which teaches rebirth in the Western Pure Land, originated in China and achieved its “full development” in Japan’s Jōdo Shinshū tradition (Buddha of Infinite Light). But what exactly is Pure Land Buddhism? The following explanation is based on the work of religious studies scholar Tesshū Shaku.

Pure Land Buddhism, which teaches Amitābha Buddha and the Western Pure Land, is a Buddhist path intended for ordinary people, unlike extraordinary religious geniuses such as Śākyamuni Buddha, who appear only rarely in human history. For ordinary people to endure a life of suffering and face death fully, there must exist a realm in which they are religiously accepted. We are saved through being accepted by a religious value system that differs from the values of society. While Buddhism is generally a path of acquiring and practicing wisdom and compassion, Pure Land Buddhism places greater emphasis on faith and salvation through the Buddha’s compassion than on enlightenment attained through wisdom. Amitābha Buddha symbolizes acceptance, and the Pure Land is the realm of acceptance.

Pure Land Buddhism is a Buddhist path that confronts the darkness within human existence head-on and then speaks of religious salvation that accepts those who aspire to rebirth in the Pure Land. It opens up a realm that embraces all suffering just as it is. Among the countless Buddhas and Pure Lands described in Buddhist traditions, why did the Pure Land of Amitābha Buddha become so prominent? One reason is that the scriptures carefully lay out the path leading to Amitābha’s Pure Land. Another, and perhaps even more important, reason is that Amitābha is the Buddha of the Western Pure Land. The west symbolizes the place to which one returns. The Japanese character for “west” (nishi, 西) shares its origin with the character , which originally signified a place of return. The world to which we ultimately return is none other than Amitābha Buddha’s Pure Land.

Yet this is not simply a world of unconditional acceptance. It is a world in which one becomes a Buddha. In other words, one attains Buddhahood and practices wisdom and compassion. By following the Buddhist path that aspires to birth in the Pure Land, Amitābha Buddha relativizes the existence that we call “self.” The Pure Land relativizes this present world. It is precisely because we are illuminated by Amitābha’s light that darkness is broken through and our shadows become vividly visible. Because the Pure Land exists, a religious narrative that transcends this world remains alive. In other words, a pathway to what lies beyond oneself is opened. And because this pathway to the outside is open, we are able to live through this world and face death completely. That is the essence of Pure Land Buddhism.

Note on “Narrative”: Here, “narrative” refers to a mode of storytelling that emphasizes the narrator’s own experiences, emotions, and subjective interpretations. It focuses on who is telling the story and how it is told, highlighting personal experience and meaning-making. This differs from a “story” in the conventional sense, which follows an objective, fixed plot structure and chronological sequence.
