This book is originally written in English, beyond West and East, in order to search for the way to allow happiness to be realized in a globally and socially responsible manner. No.3, about “Respect”――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Shinto, the earliest religion of Japan, is founded on a feeling of awe of nature. Japanese people love to watch the changing spectacle of the four seasons, as if it were something displayed in a never-ending picture scroll. Many peoms have been composed in praise of the ever-varying hues of the seasons that adorn the fabric of the “space-time continuum” of nature. The Japanese divide each season, in turn, into many shorter periods, and this serves to give a rhythm to daily life. Fall, for instance, has three very distinct phases, early, middle, and late. Such subdivisions are just one example of the sensitivity with which Japanese people respond to nature. Festivals of everyday life display an intent awareness of the changing seasons and other mysterious forces of nature.
日本の神道では自然への畏敬という心を尊重する。日本人は自然界の変化を「四季の移ろい」として愛 (め) で、その変化にそれぞれ節目を設け、日常生活のリズムとして活かそうとした。初夏、初秋、初冬、晩秋などの言葉が日本人の自然観を端的に表している。季節の変化に応じて詩が詠 (よ) まれ、祭りや、神事も日常生活も、自然界の神秘な力と季節のかかわりにおいて成り立っている。
While nature enriches the life of Japanese people in ways like this, it can also threaten them with a variety of disasters. But even when confronted by phenomena whose power far outstrips that of human beings, Japanese people feel the order of the natural world and its power to protect and support everything, living or inanimate. At such moments especially, they are struck with awe.
四季の変化は私たちの生活に豊かさを恵み、また自然現象の脅威は日常生活を脅かすこともある。そして、人間の力を超えたさまざまな自然現象をとおして自然界の秩序を知り、万物を育む力を感じたとき、私たちは自然への畏敬の念を抱く。
Another fundamental Shinto teaching is that all things under the sun are inhabited by spirits. Shinto asserts that its followers should feel grateful to these spirits and respect them, which in turn encourages people to pay homage to nature. The Shinto view of existence, in short, is that nature and human beings help one another.
さらに神道では森羅万象のすべてに精霊が宿ると考え、その精霊に対して感謝の心を抱き、崇敬の心を培うことによって自然を畏敬する精神を育み、「生かされて生きる」という人生観を形成した。
(“The Hokkekyo” known in English as the Lotus Sutra, tells a story about a bodhisattva named Jo-fulkei. He believed that ) all living things have the bussho, the possibility of becoming a Buddha. All bussho are one and the same and so they should be treated as equals. Jo-fukei accepted that people’s outward appearances can differ enormously, varying according to the unique circumstances if their lives. Nonetheless, he believed, all people have this bussho in them, and it was therefore unacceptable to refuse to treat it with reverence. This was the conviction that made it possible for Jo-fukei to respect everyone.
(『法華経』に「常不軽」という菩薩のことが出てくる。彼は、)すべての生きとし生けるものには仏性が宿っている、その仏性はすべて同一であり。平等である、しかしながら、その現れ方は世相や境遇によって異なり、多様であると考えたのである。そして、どのような境遇に居る人にも、どのような状況にある人にも、この仏性が宿っているので、その仏性を軽んじてはならないとし、その仏性を宿す存在として人間を敬うことができたのである。
The concept of bussho is one of the most important in Buddhism. It originally meant the real nature of Buddha, or Buddha nature. Yet it also came to refer to the possibility of becoming a Buddha. Therefore, when people say, “Everyone has bussho in them,” they mean, “Everyone has the possibility of becoming a Buddha.” The belief that people should honor this bussho is the basis of respect in Buddhism.
仏性ということばは仏教の教えで最も大切なものである。もともと仏としての本性というような意味だが、仏となり得る可能性という意味合いで使われている。したがって、衆生にはすべて仏性があるというのは、すべての人は仏となり得る可能性をもっているということなのだ。その仏性に対して敬意を表すことが仏教における「敬」の基本である。
