仏教には様々な宗派があり、釈尊(シャカムニ・ブッダ)という存在についての解釈も、

Buddhism has various denominations which maintain various interpretations of the being
of Shakyamuni Buddha. Then what does Dalai Lama, the world Buddhist leader, think of
“the Buddha”?――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Given that there is such a diversity even among the Buddhist traditions, we should not
have the impression that there is one homogeneous tradition, one definitive path as it
were. Personally, I prefer to relate to Buddha as a historical figure and
personality――someone who has perfected human nature and evolved into a fully
enlightened being.
仏教には多くの宗派や考え方がありますから、仏教のことを一枚岩的な伝統で、
定められたたったひとつの道がある、というふうな印象をあたえるのは、よくないと
思います。私個人としましては、ブッダを歴史上の人物であり、一人の個人として
考えるのが好きです。人間性をまっとうして、完全な悟りをえた存在へと成長をとげた
人だと思います。
However, according to certain schools of thought in Buddhism, Buddha is not just seen
as a historical figure, but also shares a timeless, infinite dimension. In this context,
although Buddha is a historical figure, the historicity of Buddha Shakyamuni would be
seen as a skillful display of Buddha’s compassionate action manifesting from the
perfected, timeless state of the dharmakāya, or Truth Body.
しかしながら、ブッダを歴史上の人物と見るだけでなく、時間を超越した無限の次元を
持つ存在、とする派もあります。この考え方でいけば、ブッダはたしかに歴史上の人物
ではありますが、シャカムニ・ブッダという史実としての人物の存在は、真理の身体で
ある法身という無時間で完全性をそなえた状態からあふれでるブッダの慈悲の行いを、
巧妙に現出させたもの、ということになるでしょう。
Buddha Shakyamuni as a historical figure is known as the nirmānakāya, which means
Emanation Body: an emanation that is assumed in order to suit the mental disposition
and needs of a particular time, place, and context.
史実にあらわれたシャカムニ・ブッダという存在は応身(nirmanakaya)、つまり発散身
として知られています。時や所や状況に応じて、そこの心的構成や必要性に見合った
ようなあり方で、真理の発散がおこなわれる、という意味です。
That emanation comes from a preceding emanation, the sambhogakāya, or perfect
resourceful state, which has arisen from the timeless expanse of the dharmakāya.
However, if we go into all of these specifics now, we would have plenty of material for
headaches and confusion!
応身というかたちに先立っているのは、報身(sambhogakaya、完全なる富によって充実
しきった状態)です。この報身は法身(dharmakaya)の時間性を超越した、無限の広がり
から起こった発散をあらわしています。しかし、これについて詳しく述べていると、
混乱しますし、頭が痛くなりますからこのくらいにしましょう(笑い)。
The simplest way to regard Buddha Shakyamuni as a historical figure is as follows. For
Buddhists――especially for those who are following a monastic way of life――Buddha
was the founder of the Buddhist monastic tradition. He is the origin of the lineage of
Buddhist monasticism. Fully ordained monks and nuns within that lineage must maintain
complete acceptance of their vows of ordination.
シャカムニ・ブッダを歴史上の人物と見るための、一番簡単な方法はこうです。仏教徒
にとって、特に修行生活を送っているものにとって、ブッダは仏教的な修行の創始者
なのです。仏教の修行生活を始めたのは彼なのです。この伝統を受け継ぐ完全なる
出家者となった僧侶や尼僧は、出家者となるときに立てた誓いを、完璧に守らなければ
なりません。
In order for someone to be a bhiksu, a fully ordained monk, or a bhiksuni, a fully
ordained nun, he or she must be a human being. So if you relate to Buddha as a fully
ordained monk then that means you relate to him as a historical, human person.
誰かが、完全な出家者である僧侶(bhiksu)や尼僧(bhiksuni)となるためには、その者は
まず人間でなければなりません。ですから、ブッダを完全な出家者としての僧侶と
考えるならば、彼を歴史上の人物、人間として考えているということになるわけ
ですね。
