「自力か他力か」は、仏教に関心のある方、とくに親鸞や浄土真宗に興味がある方にとっては頭の痛い問題かも知れません。しかし、この問題をいわゆる「二項対立」で考えすぎるのは危険ではないか、と思います。五木寛之の「他力」という本の中に、この問題への建設的なヒントがあります――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
“Self-Power or Other Power” might be a thorny issue for those who are interested in Buddhism, especially in Shinran and Shin Buddhism. But I think that to consider this issue too much in terms of so-called “dichotomy” would be dangerous. There is a constructive suggestion over this issue in “Tariki” by Hiroyuki Itsuki――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
In Japan, the term “Other Power” is most frequently heard in the phrase
“the original vow of Other Power” (tariki hongan).
〈他力〉と言えば、すぐに〈他力本願〉という言葉が浮かびます。この他力本願という
表現は、最近でもじつによく使われる言葉で、新聞やテレビなどでもちょくちょく目に
したり耳にしたりします。
It is most often used to mean leaving things up to others, or depending on
others――that is, the opposite of self-effort. For example, the phrase
“personal responsibility” has become popular lately, and in defining it
people frequently say it means that we mustn’t rely on tariki hongan.
一般に他力本願と言えば、「あなたまかせ」「他人 (ひと) まかせ」の意味で用いられる
ことが多い。つまり〈自助努力〉の反対の表現として世間に通用しているようです。
最近流行の〈自己責任〉を強調する際にも、他力本願ではいけない、と言われたり
します。
Of course, the fact that words change meaning over time cannot be avoided,
but the original meaning of tariki hongan was most definitely not dependence
on others or refusal to accept responsibility for one’s action or fate.
Before I make an attempt to describe tariki hongan, I think it is important
to point out that tariki hongan is a major philosophical concept rooted in extremely
powerful worldview, and it has served as a steadfast source of strength
for those facing a crisis.
しかし、時代とともに言葉の本来の意味が少しずつ変わってくるのは仕方ないことでは
ありますが、〈他力本願〉の本当の意味は、決してたんなる「あなたまかせ」
「無責任」ではありません。それはひときわくっきりとした強い世界観にもとづく
大きな思想であり、危機に面した人間にとってのもっとも頼もしい力であると
言っていいでしょう。
The reason that I have not used the word “faith” in discussing tariki hongan is
that I am convinced that tariki, or Other Power, has an intense power to move
the hearts of people today, a power that transcends sectarian or theological distinctions.
しかし、私が〈他力本願〉を、あえて信仰とか、信心とかいった言葉で表現しなかった
のは、他力という言葉に、宗派を超えて現代人すべての心に働きかける激しく大きな力
を感ずるからにほかなりません。
Tariki has the power to move all of us whether or not we believe in the existence of
God or the Buddha, whether or not we accept the existence of a world we can’t see,
a realm transcending all national and ethnic boundaries. I also believe
that this realm of Other Power is that “special something” we are all
unconsciously seeking.
神や仏の存在を信じる者も、信じない者も、目に見えない世界を認める者も、認めない
者も、世界中の民族や国籍を超えて、〈非常時〉に生きる私たちを、強く揺さぶる
エネルギーがそこにはある。そして、この他力の世界こそ、いま私たちが無意識に
求めている「何か」ではないか、と思うのです。
