親鸞はなぜ、法然の「南無阿弥陀仏」の教えを深めることができたのでしょうか?――

There is an easy way to be born in the Pure Land. Just concentrate on chanting
the nembutsu, says Honen. Shinran took refuge in Honen’s teaching,
but he carried it to an even deeper level. It is easy, thought Shinran,
to simply recite the nembutsu vocally, but it is much harder to take refuge
in the Buddha, honestly and without reservations, as a child might.
“Without reservations” means discarding all our preconceived notions
and knowledge. We must become like an innocent child, and
that is a difficult thing to do.
やさしく往生する道がある。それはひたすら念仏することだ、と法然は語りますが、
親鸞はその言葉に帰依しつつ、さらに一歩、深いところへ歩きだします。ただ口に念仏
を唱えることはやさしいが、赤子のように素直に、無心に仏に〈帰依する〉ことは、
そう簡単なことではない、と考えるのです。無心とは、これまで身についたさまざまな
知識や感覚を捨てさることです。赤子のように素直になる、それはなかなかできること
ではない。
Further, taking refuge is not something one decides to do consciously and
achieves through some effort. Instead, one is naturally drawn toward it
by the great power itself. The words “There is nothing I can do” are, I think,
a perfect expression of this.
さらに〈帰依する〉とは、自分で決心し、努力してするのではなく、むしろおのずと
「大きな力」によって、自然に引きよせられることなのではあるまいか。
「わがはからいにあらず」という言葉が、そのことを見事に表現しているように
思います。
One recites the nembutsu: “Namu Amida Butsu.” This is not an act of bowing
before the Buddha and vowing one’s faith in him. It is not a conscious effort
to abandon your previous self. No, one is spontaneously drawn to the point
where one cannot help but do this. How does this happen?
「南無阿弥陀仏」と、念仏する。それは仏の前にぬかずいて、あなたを信じます、
と誓うことではない。これまでの自分を捨てようとがんばることでもない。そうせず
にはいられない、というところへ人はおのずと引き寄せられるのだ、と考えるのです。
One hears that there is a great monk named Honen. This is the first act of
the invisible power. One has heard about the great monk, but one doesn’t have
the opportunity to go and listen to what he has to say. Then a good friend or
a family member tells you that Honen is preaching today and invites you to go along
and listen to him. What was it that caused you to pick up this book? That, too,
may be an act of the power, coming toward you from the other side.
法然という偉いお坊さんがいるそうだ、という噂を人から聞く。それがすでに
「見えない力」に働きかけられたことになる。噂は耳にしていたが、なかなか自分で
出かけていって話を聞く機会がない。ところが親しい友人か家族のだれかが、きょう
法然さまの話があるそうだ、一緒にいってみないか、と誘ってくれた。それも
「向こう側から」やってくる力かもしれない。
You hear Honen’s voice, you see his face, and you are moved――you don’t know
why――by what he says. You cannot suppress the desire that rises up within you
to follow him. This is not something you consciously tried to do, or something
someone else persuaded you to do. This opportunity was revealed to you
by an invisible light.
そして、法然の声を聞き、表情を見、なぜか理由もなく、その人の言葉に感動する。
この人についていこう、と湧きあがってくる衝動をおさえることができない。それは
自分がそうしようと努めているわけではなく、人の言葉に説得されたわけでもない。
そういう機会に出くわしたということが、「見えない光」に照らされたということでは
ないでしょうか。
This is the point of the great transformation from Self-Power to Other Power.
The words “There is nothing I can do” are always echoing in the depth of my mind.
“What will be, will be,” I think, and in my heart I nod in assent: “What should be,
will be.” When I do this, a wondrous sense of security come upon me
from somewhere. Although my heart was racing painfully just a moment before,
it begins to calm down, I am still floundering, but I am no longer at my heart’s mercy.
I feel as if I hear Shinran saying quietly, “There is nothing I can do.”
〈自力〉から〈他力〉への大きな転回がここに生まれます。「わがはからいにあらず」
という言葉が、私の頭の奥にいつも響いて消えません。「なるようにしかならない」
と思い、さらに、「しかし、おのずと必ずなるべきようになるのだ」と心の中で
うなずきます。そうすると、不思議な安心感がどこからともなく訪れてくるのを
感じる。さっきまで心臓が苦しいほど焦っていたのが、少しずつ落ちついてくることも
ある。ジタバタしながら、そのジタバタにとことん打ちのめされることがない。
「わがはからいにあらず」と、親鸞の静かな肉声が聞こえいてくるような感じが
するのです。
