What is the serious problem of Shin Buddhism, the largest Buddhist denomination
in Japan? ――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
There are many different religions in the world. If we were to try to classify them,
we might first of all say that there are religions that speak pf the exclusive power
and might of a transcendent being. They teach that such a power can deliver
a variety of benefits to us. Many religions in the world correspond to this type of
“religion of power.”
私が思いますには、世界にはさまざまな宗教がありますが、それを分類すると、
第一には、もっぱら超越者の威力、パワーを説き、その威力によってこそ、さまざまな
利益 (りやく) がもたらされると教えるものがあります。世界の多くの宗教は、
このようなタイプの「力の宗教」に属するものであります。
On the other hand, there are also religions that speak of universal or global principles.
They teach that true human life is established when one learns those principles and
lives in accordance with them. The Buddhist teaching, as revealed
by Gautama Buddha, corresponds to this type of “religion as path.”
それに対して、第二には、もっぱら宇宙、世界の原理、道理について説き、その原理、
道理を学び、それに従って生きるところに、まことの人生が成りたつということを
教えるものがあります。ゴータマ・ブッダが明かした仏教とは、まさしくこの第二の
タイプ、「道の宗教」に属するものであります。
However, as Buddhism was transmitted from India to China and Japan,
it encountered various regional religions, most of which were religions of power.
As it merged with those religions, Buddhism changed in large measure into
a religion of power as well.
ただし、この仏教も、インド、中国、日本に流伝するについて、それぞれの地域の
宗教、そのほとんどは第一のタイプに属するものでありましたが、それらと重層する
ことによって、多分に力の宗教に変貌しております。
As he learned the Pure Land teachings and the path of nembutsu, Shinran
earnestly wished to return to the original Buddhist teachings of Gautama Buddha.
Hence, he completely did away with those aspects derived from religions of power
and clearly established that the Shin Buddhist path to enlightenment is
a religion as path.
親鸞は、この浄土の教え、念仏の道を学ぶについて、ひとえにゴータマ・ブッダの
本来の仏教に立ちかえることを願って、その力の宗教に重層する側面を、徹底して排除
し、明確に「道の宗教」としての真宗の仏道を確立し、開顕したのであります。
However, following the death of Shinran, the Shin Buddhist teaching of
the nembutsu became enmeshed in various ways with Shintō, which is a Japanese
religion of power. This is the situation even today. In this regard, it is important
that we reflect critically on past history and seek to return truly to the fundamental
purport of Shinran. The fact that, even today, some still view tariki as
some kind of power is a reflection of the “Shintō-ization” of Shin Buddhism.
This is another point of which we need to be fully aware, as we study Shin Buddhism.
しかしながら、この真宗の念仏の教えも、親鸞が亡くなった後に、さまざまに日本の力
の宗教としての神道と重層して、今日におよんでおります。このことについては、過去
の歴史をきびしく反省して、正しく親鸞の本意に立ちかえっていかねばなりません。
今日、真宗のおける他力ということが、何かの威力、パワーと理解される側面が
あるのは、このような真宗の神道化によるものにほかなりません。皆さんが真宗を学ぶ
については、もっとも注意していただきたい点です。
The teaching of Shinran――the Shin Buddhist path to enlightenment――is not
in any way a religion of power. It is a religion as path――the path of awakening,
in which we earnestly say the nembutsu and attain Buddhahood, realizing growth
and maturity as true human beings.
親鸞の教え、真宗の仏道は、決してパワーの宗教ではありません。それはひとえに
称名念仏して仏に成っていく、まことの人間として、成長、成熟していくことを
めざす、「道の宗教」であります。
