How do I know the shape of the Father of All Things?

道 (タオ) にして従って働くパワーは

どんな顔や姿なのか。

こう訊かれれば、確かに

それは漠とし広く暗いもの、

把 (とら) えどころのないもの、としか言えない。

だがね、

すべてのものの奥に働くパワーは

それ自体、

ひとつのイメージになるはずだ。

すべての物の内に働くもの、

言わば、もののエッセンス

すべての形の原形

それは

あらゆるものを成長させる種だ、

ライフ・エナジーの根源なんだ。

また、こんなふうに言えば

タオのパワーのイメージが

すこしは出てくるかもしれん。

なにしろこれは

太古から今まで続いているから

仮りに名づけたタオという名は

けっして消えうせないし、

多くの人びとがタオを体得してきたんだ。

これを、

どうやったら知ることができるかって?

それは君のhereとnowのなかで

君全体の奥にあるものを感じる――

それしか手はないんじゃないかな。

“Tao” is the natural order of the universe. It is said that anyone who is connected with it
will never waste his or her life. From the timeless masterpiece, which has evoked many

The wise ones of old had subtle wisdom and depth of

    understanding,

So profound that they could not be understood,

And because they could not be understood.

Perforce must they be so described:

  Cautious, like crossing a winter stream,

  Irresolute, like one fearing danger all around,

  Grave, like one acting as guest,

  Self-effacing, like ice beginning to melt,

  Genuine, like a piece of undressed wood,

  Open-minded, like a valley,

  And mixing freely, like murky water.

Who can find repose in a muddy world?

  By lying still, it becomes clear.

Who can maintain his calm for long?

  By activity, it comes back to life.

He who embraces this Tao

  Guards against being over-full.

Because he guards against being over-full,

  He is beyond wearing out and renewal.

むかしは

タオをよく体得した人がいて

そのありさまは

神秘的で暗く、遠く

すべてに通じているようで

どうにも測りようのない深さだった。

こういう人物を言葉で描こうとすると

比喩的な言い方をするほかない。

その慎重な態度は

危険な冬の川を渡る人のようだ。

用心深いさまは

見知らぬ森を通る人のようだ。

落ち着いて油断のないさまは

よその家を訪ねたお客みたいであり

それでいて、人と交わるさまは

氷が融けてゆくような滑らかさだ。

その素朴な様子は

山から伐りだしたばかりの白木 (しらき) のようだし、

心の広やかさは、大きな谷を思わせる。

とにかく取りとめなくて、

その点では濁った水みたいであり

濁ったままゆったりしているから

いつしか澄んでくる――そういう

在り方なんだ。

安らかにくつろいでいるくせに

いつの間にか動いている、

そしてなにかを生み出している。

こういう人だから

無理をしないんだ、

タオを身につけた人というのは

消耗しない。消耗しないから

古いものをいつしか新しいものにしてゆく。

いつも「自分」でいられて

新しい変化に応じられるのさ。

“Tao” is the natural order of the universe whose character one's human intuition must
discern in order to realize the potential for individual wisdom. Does an Eastern wisdom
over 2600 years ago make our way to live today transform fundamentally? From the

“Favor and disgrace cause one dismay;

What we value and what we fear are within our Self.”

What does this mean:

“Favor and disgrace cause one dismay?”

Those who receive a favor from above

  Are dismayed when they receive it,

  And dismayed when they lose it.

What does this mean:

“What we value and what we fear are within our

  Self?”

We have fears because we have a self.

When we do not regard that self as self,

What have we to fear?

Therefore he who values the world as his self

  May then be entrusted with the government of the

  world;

And he who loves the world as his self――

  The world may then be entrusted to his care.

ぼくらはひとに

褒められたり貶 (けな) されたりして、

びくびくしながら生きている。

自分がひとにどう見られるか

いつも気にしている。しかしね

そういう自分というのは

本当の自分じゃあなくて、

社会にかかわっている自分なんだ。

もうひとつ

天と地のむこうの道 (タオ) に

つながる自分がある。

そういう自分にもどれば

人に嘲 (あざ) けられたって褒められたって

ふふんという顔ができる。

社会から蹴落とされるのは

怖いかもしれないけど、

タオから見れば

社会だって変わってゆく。だから

大きなタオの働きを少しでも感じれば

くよくよしなくなるんだ。

たかの知れた自分だけれど

社会だって、

たかの知れた社会なんだ。

もっと大きなタオのライフに

つながっている自分こそ大切なんだ。

そのほうの自分を愛するようになれば

世間からちょっとパンチをくらったって

平気になるのさ。だって

タオに愛されている自分は

世間を気にしてびくつく自分とは

別の自分なんだからね。

社会の駒のひとつである自分は

いつもあちこち突き飛ばされて

前のめりに走っているけれど、

そんな自分とは

違う自分がいると知ってほしいんだ。

The best of men is like water;

In his heart, he loves what is profound;

In his relations with others, he loves kindness;

In his words, he loves sincerity;

In government, he loves peace;

In business affairs, he loves ability;

In his actions, he loves choosing the right time.

  It is because he does not contend

  That he is without reproach.

タオの在り方にいちばん近いのは

天と地であり、

タオの働きにいちばん近いのは

水の働きなんだ。そして

タオの人がすばらしいのは

水のようだというところにある。

水ってのは

すべてのものを生かし、養う。

それでいて争わず、威張りもしない。

人の厭 (いや) がる低いところへ、先にたって行く。

水はよほどタオの働きに

近いんだ。

タオの人は、自分のいる所を、いつも

善いところと思っている。

心は、深い淵のように静かだ。

つきあう人をみんな善い人だとし、

自分の言うことは

みんな信じてもらえると考え

社会にいても

タオの働きの善さを見失わない。

その人は、手出しをしないで

あらゆる人たちの能力を充分に発揮させ、

人びとは

自分のいちばんいいタイミングで活動する。

これひと口でまとめると

争うな、ということだ。

水のように、争わなければ、

誰からも非難をうけないじゃないか。

Here we have an easy-to-understand translation of the essence of Eastern philosophy,
which has evoked many people’s sympathy since its publication. From this timeless
masterpiece, I would like to quote some phrases which have a great effect on me――

When the people of the Earth all know beauty as

    beauty,

There arises (the recognition of) ugliness.

When the people of the Earth all know the good as

    good,

  There arises (the recognition of) evil.

Therefore:

  Being and non-being interdependent in growth;

  Difficult and easy interdepend in completion;

  Long and short interdepend in position;

  High and low interdepend in harmony;

  Front and behind interdepend in company.

Therefore the Sage:

  Manages affaire without action;

  Preaches the doctrine without words;

All things take their rise, but he does not turn away

  from them;

He gives them life, but does not take possession of

  them;

He acts, but he does not appropriate;

Accomplishes, but claims no credit.

It is because he lays claim to no credit

That the credit cannot be taken away from him.

美しいと汚いは、

別々にあるんじゃあない。

美しいものは、

汚いものがあるから

美しいと呼ばれるんだ。

善悪だってそうさ。

善は、

悪があるから、

善と呼ばれるんだ。

悪の在るおかげで

善が在るってわけさ。

同じように、

ものが「在る」のも、

「無い」があるからこそありうるんでね、

お互いに

片一方だけじゃあ、在りえないんだ。

長い、と言ったって

短いがあるから長いのさ。

高い、と言ったって

低いものがあるから高いんだ。

ひとつの歌だって、そこに

声とトーンがあるから歌になる。

前だって

後があるから

前もあるわけでね。

だから

道 (タオ) の働きにつながる人は

知ったかぶって手軽くきめつけたりしない。

ものの中にある自然のリズムに任せて

手出しをしない。

すべてのものは生まれでて

千変万化して動いてゆくんだからね。

このタオの

本当のリアリティを受け入れる時

人は

何かを造りあげても威張らない。

成功しても、

その成果を自分のものにしない。

自分のものだと主張しないから

かえって人に忘れられない。そして

誰もその人の成果を

奪い取ろうとしないんだ。

The First Panchen Lama’s seventeen-stanza poem is a guide to specific Buddhist
techniques for overcoming fear of death and for potentially utilizing the stages of dying
for spiritual advancement. It is my hope that this description of the inner, psychological
experience and physical changes will provide helpful reflection for those concerned
about death and the deeper levels of the mind, and that it will serve as a source of
information for scientists interested in working with Buddhist scholars and yogis on
issues around dying.

パンチェン・ラマ一世の十七偈は、死の恐怖を克服し、死のプロセスを利用して
より高い境地へ到達するための仏教の修行法について説いた手引き書です。わたしは、
ここに書かれている心理的な経験や身体的な変化の描写が、死や深いレベルの意識に
不安を抱いている人々の助けになるとともに、死に関して、仏教の学僧や修行者と
共同研究することに関心がある科学者たちの情報源として役立つことを願っています。

Stanza One

I and all beings throughout space and without exception

Go for refuge until the ultimate of enlightenments

To the past, present, and future Buddhas, the Doctrine,

  and the Spiritual Community.

May we be released from the frights of this life, the

  intermediate state, and the next.

第一偈

わたしと虚空のような無数の衆生が、究極の悟りの境地を得る日まで、

過去・現在・未来の三世の仏と法と僧伽に帰依いたします。

どうかわたしたちが、今生・中有・後生での恐れから解き放たれますように。

Within an attitude of self-help, Buddhist go for refuge to the Buddha as the teacher, to
Buddha’s Doctrine (states of realization and teachings of them) as actual refuge, and to
the Spiritual Community as guides to that refuge. They develop conviction and that
internalizing the doctrine can offer protection from suffering. They consider these Three
Jewels (Buddha, his Doctrine, and the Spiritual Community) to be the final refuge.

仏教徒は、あくまで自分で努力するという態度を基本にして、「仏」と「法」と
「僧伽」に帰依します。師である「仏」に帰依し、悟りの境地とそれについての教えで
ある「法」を信頼し、その教えを受けて修行する集団「僧伽」に道案内を頼む
ということです。「法」を自分のものとすることで、苦しみから解放されるという確信
をもち、この三つの宝 (三宝:さんぽう) を最後のよりどころとします。

Seeking refuge only to relieve your own suffering and attain liberation from cyclic
existence does not fulfill the qualifications of altruistic refuge. Your perspective would not
be vast. Your attitude of refuge should be for the sake of all sentient beings, for their
freedom from suffering and attainment of Buddhahood. You should seek the
omniscience of Buddhahood in order to fulfill the primary aim――to help others.

自分自身が苦しみから解放されること、すなわち輪廻から解脱することを願って帰依
しても、それだけではまだ視野が狭く、利他的な帰依とはいえません。あなたの帰依
は、生きとし生けるものが苦しみから解放され、仏陀の境地に至ることを願うもので
なくてはなりません。そして他者を助けるというもっとも大切な目的のためには、仏陀
の境地である「すべてを見通す意識」(一切智智)を求める必要があります。
