“The Book of Tea (1906)” is the masterpiece for spreading the excellence of Japanese
spirituality to the world. In this book, Okakura, the author and one of the Japan’s greatest
masters of English, gives us commentaries on the important points of art appreciation
with the historical background of the times when it was published――more to come both
in English and in Japanese.
Another common mistake is that of confusing art with archaeology. The veneration born
of antiquity is one of the best traits in the human character, and fain would we have it
cultivated to a great extent.
いま一つのありふれた誤謬は、芸術を考古学と混同することである。古いものに対する
生来の畏敬の念は、人間の性格中の最善の特徴の一つで、われわれとても喜んでこれを
よりいっそう涵養 (かんよう) したいと願っている。
The old masters are rightly to be honored for opening the path to future enlightenment.
The mere fact that they have passed unscathed through centuries of criticism and come
down to us still covered with glory commands our respect.
往昔 (いにしえ) の巨匠たちは、未来の開化の道を拓いたことに対しても、当然尊敬を
うくべきである。彼等が幾世紀にわたる批評のなかを無傷で通り抜け、われわれの時代
にまで至ってなお光栄に蔽 (おお) われているという、ただそれだけの事実が、われわれ
の敬意を博している。
But we should be foolish indeed if we valued their achievement simply on the score of
age. Yet we allow our historical sympathy to override our aesthetic discrimination. We
offer flowers of approbation when the artist is safely laid in his grave.
だが、もしわれわれが、単に年代の古きの故に彼等の業績を貴 (とおと) ぶのであった
ならば、それはじつに愚かなことというべきであろう。その上われわれは、われわれの
歴史的同情心がわれわれの美的鑑識力をふみにじるのを許している。芸術家が無事に墓
のなかに横たえられると、われわれは賞賛の花を供げるのである。
The nineteenth century, pregnant with the theory of evolution, has moreover created in
us the habit of losing sight of the individual in the species. A collector is anxious to
acquire specimens to illustrate a period or a school, and forget that a single masterpiece
can teach us more than any number of the mediocre products of a given period or
school. We classify too much and enjoy too little. The sacrifice of the aesthetic to the
so-called scientific method of exhibition has been the bane of many museums.
19世紀は、進化論が横行した結果、かてて加えて、種のなかに個人を見失うという習慣
をつくり出すようになった。蒐集家 (しゅうしゅうか) は、一時代もしくは一流派を説明
すべき標本を手に入れるのに、浮き身をやつしている。そうして、ただ一個の傑作が、
ある一時代もしくは一流派の凡庸な作品のいかなる数にもまさって、われわれを教える
ところが多いものだということを、忘れている。われわれは分類することあまりに
多く、楽しむことあまりに少ない。いわゆる科学的陳列法のために美的陳列法を犠牲に
供したことは、多くの美術館の弊害となっている。
The claims pf contemporary art cannot be ignored in any vital scheme of life. The art of
to-day is that which really belongs to us; it is our own reflection. In condemning it we but
condemn ourselves.
同時代の芸術の権利は、およそ重要な生活の仕組みにおいて、無視さるを得ないもので
ある。今日の芸術は、真にわれわれに属するところのものなのである。すなわち
それは、われわれ自身の反映なのである。それを咎 (とが) めるのは、われわれ自身を
咎めることになる。
We say that the present age possesses no art――who is responsible for this? It is
indeed a shame that despite all our rhapsodies about the ancients we pay so little
attention to our own possibilities. Struggling artists, weary souls lingering in the shadow of
cold disdain!
われわれはいう、現代は美術をもたない、と。それならこれは誰の責任なのか? 古人に
対してはあらゆる熱狂を示しながら、われわれ自身の可能性に対して何らの注意を
払わないというのは、まことに恥辱である。奮闘をつづけている芸術家たち、冷たい
侮蔑のかげによろめき疲れたこの人々!
In our self-centered century, what inspiration do we offer them? The past may well look
with pity at the poverty of our civilization; the future will laugh at the barrenness of our
art. We are destroying art in destroying the beautiful in life.
この自分本位の世紀において、われわれは彼等にはたしていかなる激励を寄せて
いるか? 過去がわれわれの文明の貧しさを憐れむとしても、むべなるかなだ。未来は
われわれの芸術の不毛をあざ笑うことだろう。われわれは人生の美しいものを破壊する
ことによって、芸術を破壊しつつある。
