“The Book of Tea (1906)” is the masterpiece for spreading the excellence of Japanese
spirituality to the world. In this book, Okakura, the author and one of the Japan’s greatest
masters of English, gives us commentaries on the secret of flower arrangement in the
tea-room with the historical background ――more to come both in English and in
Japanese.
Anyone acquainted with the ways of our tea-and-flower masters must have noticed the
religious veneration with which they regard flowers. They do not cull at random, but
carefully select each branch or spray with an eye to the artistic composition they have in
mind. They would be ashamed should they chance to cut more than were absolutely
necessary.
わが国の茶や花の宗匠たちのやり方をよく知っている人なら、彼等が花を目 (もく) する
に宗教的な尊敬の念を以てする事実に、気がついたにちがいない。彼等は手当たり次第
に折り取るようなことはしない。一本の枝や小枝といえども、おのが心に描く芸術的
構成に照らして、慎重に選び取るのである。もし彼等が、万が一にも絶対に必要なもの
以上を伐り取るようなことがあれば、彼等は恥じたことであろう。
It may be remarked in this connection that they always associate the leaves, if there be
any, with the flower, for their object is to present the whole beauty of plant life.
このことと関連して一言を費やしてもよいと思われるのは、彼等が、つねに花とともに
葉を――もしわずかでも葉があるなら――これを添えるということである。それという
のは、彼等の目ざすところは、草木のいのちの美の全体をあらわすにあるからだ。
In this respect, as in many others, their method differs from that pursued in Western
countries. Here we are apt to see only the flower stems, heads, as it were, without body,
stuck promiscuously into a vase.
この点においても、他の多くの点におけると同じく、彼等の方法は、西洋の国々で
行われているのとは違っている。そこでは、花茎だけが、いわば胴体のない頭だけが、
雑然と花瓶に突っ込んであるのを見かけることがよくあるのだ。
When a tea-master has arranged a flower to his satisfaction he will place it on the
Tokonoma, the place of honor in a Japanese room. Nothing else will be placed near it
which might interfere with its effect, not even a painting, unless there be some special
aesthetic reason for the combination. It rests there like an enthroned prince, and the
guests or disciples on entering the room will salute it with a profound bow before making
their addresses to the host.
満足のゆくところまで花を生けおわると、茶人はそれを床の間、すなわち日本の室内
での名誉ある場所、に置く。それの効果の妨げるのをおそれて、花の傍には何一つ
置かれない。たとえ一幅の絵であろうと、配合上の何か特別な美的理由があるので
なければ、置かれることはない。花は王座について王侯のごとくに、そこにくつろいで
いる。そうして客も、弟子も、室内に入るやまずうやうやしく花に対して敬礼し、
しかるのちに始めて主人に挨拶をのべる。
Drawings from masterpieces are made and published for the edification of amateurs.
The amount of literature on the subject is quite voluminous. When the flower fades, the
master tenderly consigns it to the river or carefully buries it in the ground. Monuments
even are sometimes erected to their memory.
素人愛好家のために生花 (いけばな) の傑作を写したものが出版されている。生花に
関する文献もじつに厖大 (ぼうだい) な量に上っている。花がしおれてしまうと、宗匠は
慇懃にそれを川の流れにゆだねるか、でなければ鄭重 (ていちょう) に地中に埋める。花
の追憶のために記念碑が建てられることさえある。
