“The Book of Tea (1906)” is the masterpiece for spreading the excellence of Japanese
spirituality to the world. In this book, Okakura, the author and one of the Japan’s greatest
masters of English, gives us commentaries on the significance of existence of Japanese
tea-room in the world――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
In the tea-room the fear of repetition is a constant presence. The various objects for the
decoration of a room should be selected that no color or design shall be repeated. If you
have a living flower, a painting of flowers is not allowable. If you are using a round kettle,
the water pitcher should be angular. A cup with a black glaze should not be associated
with a tea-caddy of black lacquer.
茶室では、反復のおそれがいつも存在している。室内装飾のためのいろいろな物は、
色彩も意匠も重複しないように選択されねばならない。もし貴君が生花を用いる
ならば、花の絵を掛けることは許されない。もし貴君が円 (まる) い茶釜を使うなら、
水差しは角ばったものでなければならぬ。黒茶碗は黒塗りの茶入れと並べて用いること
はできない。
In placing a vase or an incense burner on the tokonoma, care should be taken not to put
it in the exact center, lest it divide the space into equal halves. The pillar of the tokonoma
should be of a different kind of wood from the other pillars, in order to break any
suggestion of monotony in the room.
花入れや香炉を床の間に置くのにも、それを真正面に置かないように気をつけねば
ならぬ。それはその空間を真半分に分割するのをおそれてである。室内の単調の気味を
破るために、床の間の柱は他の柱とは違った種類の木材を用いねばならない。
Here again the Japanese method of interior decoration differs from that of the Occident,
where we see objects arrayed symmetrically on mantelpieces and elsewhere. In Western
houses we are often confronted with what appears to us useless reiteration.
ここでも、また、室内装飾の日本のやり方は、西洋のそれと違っている。西洋の方では
何もかもマントルピースやその他の場処に相称的に並べてある。西洋の家ではわれわれ
の眼には無益のくり返しと思われるものによく出会 (でくわ) す。
We find it trying to talk to a man while his full-length portrait stares at us from behind his
back. We wonder which is real, he of the picture, or he who talks, and feel a curious
conviction that one of them must be fraud.
彼の背後からその人の全身像がわれわれを見つめているところで、その当人と話を
交えるのはわれわれには堪えられない。画中の彼と、話している彼と、そのどちらが
本物なのかとわれわれはいぶかる。そうして、そのどちらかがにせ物に違いないという
奇妙な確信を抱くのである。
Many a time have we sat at a festive board contemplating, with a secret shock to our
digestion, the representation of abundance on the dining-room walls. Why these pictured
victims of chase and sport, the elaborate carvings of fishes and fruit? Why the display of
family plates, reminding us of those who have dines are dead?
何遍ということなくわれわれは、陽気な食卓に坐って、食堂の四方の壁いっぱいの絵を
眺めながら、ひそかに消化に衝撃を与えられたものである。これらの遊猟の獲物の絵
や、魚や果物の丹精こめた彫りものは、いったいどうしたわけなのか? なぜ、家宝の
金銀の食器類をひろげ立てて、ここで食事をしたが今は死んで居ない人々のことを
われわれに思い出させるのであるか?
The simplicity of the tea-room and its freedom from vulgarity make it truly a sanctuary
from the vexation of the outer world. There and there alone can one consecrate himself
to undisturbed adoration of the beautiful.
茶室の簡素なこと、その俗塵から離脱していることは、真にそれを外界のわずらわしさ
からの避難所にしている。そこにおいて、また、そこにおいてのみ、人は攪乱されない
美の礼拝に打ち込むことができる。
In the sixteenth century the tea-room afforded a welcome respite from labor to the fierce
warriors and statesmen engaged in the unification and reconstruction of Japan. In the
seventeenth century, after the strict formalism of the Tokugawa rule had been developed,
it offered the only opportunity possible for the free communion of artistic spirits. Before
a great work of art there was no distinction between daimyo, samurai, and commoner.
第16世紀にあっては、日本の統一と再建に従事した猛々 (たけだけ) しい武人や政治家
たちに、茶室は塵労 (じんろう) からの悦 (よろこ) ばしい休息を与えた。第17世紀に
入って、徳川幕府の厳格な形式主義が発達してからは、それは芸術精神の自由な交流の
ためのただ一つの可能な機会を提供した。偉大な芸術品の前には、大名と、武士と、
平民との差別は存在しなかった。
Nowadays industrialism is making true refinement more and more difficult all the world
over. Do we not need the tea-room more than ever?
今日、産業主義は、世界中いずこにあっても、真の風雅をますます困難となしつつ
ある。われわれは従来よりもなおいっそう茶室を必要とするのではないだろうか?
